Gas cap and the paint saver......WTF??????

Alright guys, tell what the deal is with 04 BD 2 piece tanks.
Over the last 6 months or so the right side gas cap (which is the side that had the vent mechanism that I removed) had been harder and harder to loosen when I need fuel. The black rubber or nylon piece seems to have expanded to the point where it is very difficult to unscrew. I used a light layer of lube and that helped a bit for a while. Yesterday, the SOB was stuck but good (I really do not tighten it down that much???) and as I finally got it to turn, the entire assembly unscrewed from the tank, cap and paint saver. The rubber seal looks like hell and there seems to be some kind of rubberized glue or some crap that was sealing the paint saver to the tank. Now, what is the best course of action on this? Epoxy or JB Weld it back in? Have the dealer do something with it? Thanks!

EXACT same thing on my 04 Mastiff.!!! I haven't really addressed this problem, other than taking a small punch and small hammer and giving the bung a couple love taps to retighten. Once I get some other problems fixed, I'm gonna remove the right side bung, reapply some sort of sealant and cross my fingers.!! These scoots are finnecky as hell.!!

Maybe others will know

Thanks Hip, any idea what the "glue" is that holds the paint saver in place?

It'll have to be some sort of gas resistant goo for sure. I was leaning towards something in the JB weld line of products, but I'm sure there are others on this forum who would know what product to use. Ours are not the first tanks to have this problem!!!

I have used JB on bikes since the mid 80's and the stuff is so good you can machine threads in to it. The only down side I can think of is once you JB it in there, its probably in there for good!!!

I'll shoot the guys at BDM an email and ask them what sealant they use at the factory.!!

GDOG...here's the response I just got from Nick Brewer at BDM. This is what they use at the factory to seal the paint savers in place in the two piece tanks....

Loctite E-20NS the part no. 29335.

CenturyVallen - A Leader in Industrial MRO, Facility Maintenance, Safety Solutions and the Services to Support them.

I hope this helps. I'm going out to grab some tomorrow.!!
