Eric, or anybody, but Eric just did his so here's the question. Instead of taking the forks off the bike can you put it up on a stand and remove the lower sections to replace the seals and bearings?

Not a prime member, but I ordered it for when I do it, could be next summer, I just changed the oil last summer and figure I will do this the next time I install a front tire, so I saved the $99 charge for prime:oldsmile:. They just said on the news that 1 in 5 has prime shipping, that's a lot of coin.:oldwtf:

That's a good question. I would rather not take my front forks off either....especially if I am drinking! I bet it can be done and I will try it. The less I take apart the better.

X2....Received mine a week or two ago and it is sitting next to my WSW rebuild kit. I am trying to finish another project first. And, I've got to perform maintenance on the boat so it's ready to go...so it's the third project in line.

The only problem that I can see would be if you can't jack it up high enough to get the lower portion off before you hit the ground, but I have a pit and I could position the bike so the forks would be over the pit and height wouldn't be an issue. I have never done this yet, but I'm with ya Nuke, I would rather not pull them completely off

Great. I can lift the front end as high as required. I can use an engine lift, ceiling hoist, or adjustable I beam if needed. I'm thinking the engine lift will work since I used it to lift a new engine over the transom when swapping out the engine 10 years ago.

Well interesting question I don't see why you HAVE to remove the forks obviously need the room. However if you don't pull the fork tube off you can't clean the spring and damper since that would come out the top of the tube. Truth be told I didn't pull mine out either since I didn't loosen the fork tube cap and didn't want to install just to loosen them. All the gunk sits at the bottom of the fork leg anyways.

With that said it's not any more work to remove the leg just the 4 pinch bolts on the trees. You already have to remove the wheel, fender, brace, and brake caliper anyways. I feel like it would be a pain not pulling them off and trying to drive the seal while holding the lower leg with your other hand. I just sat mine on the rubber floor to hold it together while I drove the seal.

I just changed the oil in my ridgeback from 20w to 30w so just pulled the wheel and damper bolts and refilled.

You know Eric, I'm about due for a fork job. You could be my new best friend:oldlaugh: I don't have that cool tool.
You are not selling?

I didn't have the cool tool a few years ago and used PVC ...tool was 10x easier to drive in the seal and Jon and I were hammering away on the PVC it took two people one to hold it and one to hammer and it was just stupid.

No interest at all, so I'm going to keep riding for now.

I know what you mean about the PVC. I did it like that myself a couple of years ago. What a PITA. They are due again. Good winter project.

That seal kit won't work you are missing the copper bushings in my last picture. You want to replace that bushing.

Look up 41mm Fork Bushing Kit and you will see what I mean. Those kits are about $30 then you still need to buy the seals which is another $10 and also buy fork oil.

For the price WSW sells the whole kit plus the 10oz of oil all measured out for like $60. It's worth the price and don't have to fart around measuring oil then you have 12 oz left you won't use for years.

HI Eric, I am at the stage to rebuild my front forks on my 06 Mastiff. Could you give me the URL (link) to WSW for all the parts that I might need. Thanks a great write up on the build. Photos are worth keeping for reference. Thanks for taking the time to share your build.

Hi Eric, I found WSW's web site and will give them a call tomorrow. Since all my other choppers had springers, this will be my first on the forks. Should be easy, with all the help on the subject, I feel like I'm in good company. Thank you for your write up. Will let you know how I fair on my rebuild...
