Just to completely strip your dog down for powdercoating the frame runs about $5K. It's most likely going to be totaled. I would buy it back, depending on the cost, part it out and with a little effort, you'll be ahead of what you originally wanted for it.

Looking forward to retirement
I have State Farm and when I sold my wife's 883 Sportster to get her the 1200 Sportster I asked my rep this exact sanario. He told me even though all my bikes cars and trucks have full coverage. If Anyone other than me and my wife drive them, they will NOT be covered. HE SAID, '' DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE ON THAT BIKE AS THERE IS NO COVERAGE WITH THEM OPERATING IT"!!!!! You put them on the back and take them for a ride, but if they have the throttle, NO COVERAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that's State Farm and you have Progressive.

Well just got off phone w progressive. I am covered minus my $500 deductible. He is not responsible for anything. I am not taking anything off, already had enough bad luck but i may try and buy it back. What would be a safe, safe price to buy back? The guy also said he was giving me the 500 but i do not have it so i am not counting on it. A+ for progressive insurance. Adjuster be here tomorrow. Stay posted

Now this goes back to what happens if you let someone who drives your car get in a wreck that does not have any insurance?

I'm really worried since this guy didn't have a valid MC license that your insurance is going to you a huge hassle. Have you spoke to a lawyer? It might be in your best interest before you move forward with your insurance company to see what your options are. I wouldn't do anythign further until you at least speak to a lawyer.

Just Checked Progressive Website:

Theres a couple post on there:

can I let my son-in-law use my motocycle occasionaly and be covered with my policy with Progressive

Posted on 7/28/2010 at 11:07 AM by Dan Burke
@Dan, He's probably covered, as long as he's only riding your motorcycle occasionally. To make sure, you can either log in to your policy and review your coverage, or give us a call at 1-800-PROGRESSIVE.

@Sal, Yes, he's covered, as long as he has your permission to ride your motorcycle and isn't riding it more than 12 times a year.

You should be able to take off everything you put on on your own, all the upgrade you did you should be able to take them off.

If it makes you feel any better, I work with Progressive on a regular basis and they are by far my favorite insurance company to deal with. They pay quickly and there is rarely any disagreements between us - they usually just write their estimate based on my appraisal. Good luck and I'm sorry that happened to you!

Your best bet is to get with someone "like lulu" that knows Big Dogs and what custom parts actually cost for these dogs. Most adjusters see all custom bikes as a Harley. They have no clue what actual costs are and rely solely on experienced dealers/shops to give them true values for total repairs. If it's totalled, be sure to let your adjuster know you're interested in buying it back as salvage. Before making an offer, see what they are willing to sell it back for. You may be surprised to see it's less than what you might have offered to begin with.

If the Insurance gives you 12K for it take it, buy the bike back. Wait for the potential buyer to get out of the hospital and tell him his new bike is your place waiting for him to pick it up. That way you can get more than the 12.5 you were asking. If he refuses put the MF back in the hospital. :D

Said he didnt think it was totaled. Said he get frame powdercoated for 400 bucks. Inknow for sure tomorrow
$400 :loony: Thats after someone (labor $$$) strips it down to nothing. Then someone has to put it all back together (labor $$$$). What about the tins? Need to respray all the tins too, thats a good chunk of change with your paintjob to get back the same quality.

Don't let the guy dick you over, call a lawyer or a couple. Most will offer some tips for free over the phone as they have to bait you somehow. At least get enough info to understand your rights and applicable state laws.

Labor is going to be the killer charge here, like Eric said. Maybe he can get it powdercoated for $400, but I don't see it being striped down and put back together for that price. I would work to get it totaled out and be done with it.

If you can buy it back for cheap, I would then buy a BDM roller frame package and rebuild it.

Man I'm sure you've heard this a hundred times already, but in all the years I've been messing with bikes, and all the bikes I've bought and sold, no test ride until money changes hands. Good luck, sorry this happened to you.
