Engine Quit!!!!!

Well I as was taking a short ride on my 2008 K-9 EFI this morning to warm it up for making the 2500 mile oil change. The engine simply quit on me - no warning, no unusual indicator lights - nothing. Tried to restart, got the speedo hand sweep, but heard a very weak sound coming from the fuel pump inside the tank. Normally, it makes a fairly loud whine - not now, just a quieter hummmm. There are no ECH indicator lights visible under the seat of my bike. I don't know where they are hidden so I don't know if these lights are indicating anything. Any ideas from you that have had similar failures would help. Thanks.

:hi: :hi: :hi:

Forgot to mention the engine turns over like normal. It simply doesn't start. When the engine stopped on me, it didn't hesitate, sputter, or bogg down like it was loosing fuel, it just quit running. I checked the battery terminal and they are all tight. Also, checked the battery voltage and read 12.8 volts.

Update: Pulled spark plugs and turned engine over while grounding plug base against head bolt - no spark at either plug. The diagnostic flowchart says to pull the right side battery cover and check indicator lights. My K-9 appears to have a one piece cover. Not sure how to remove it, but I'll look to see what I can do. Guess I'll take it over to Dallas Strokers next week. That's a long trailer drive.

Pull off the air cleaner and crank it while spraying carb cleaner down the throttle body. If it runs you know you have a fuel delivery problem. Or just take it to the dealer.

Your engine crank sensor died...
It will turn over but not fire because it does not know when too...

Sorry to hear Whistler......I'd take it back to Strokers and let them fix it. Its under warranty and it sounds like its not going to be a quick fix anyway. Good luck

Vegas... good idea, but I suggest using gasoline in a spray bottle instead.

Pig... he said he has no spark.

I think Neil is probably right. Being under warrenty though, its best to let them deal with it. If it wasn't I would say check the sensor by swapping one out...

No spark was edited after my post.

I would also check to be sure you don't have a broken wire at the coil. I've had to repair mine.

I Don't Believe This!!!!!!!!!!

Trailered my K-9 to Dallas Strokers this morning. 125 mile ride one way. When the mechanic turned the key on - it fired right up!!!! Can you believe that. Yesterday evening I tried starting it and the engine turned over fine - just wouldn't fire. Appears the trailer ride over fixed, I assume, a bad connection somewhere between the EHC and ignition module. I'll search some of the other threads, but has anyone experienced a similar situation? The battery charge if full and all wiring connections to the batter are perfect.

Thanks.

Sounds like you have my luck. Did Strokers not check anything while you were there? Sorry to hear

I just went through all this on my 04 chop and it turned out my EHC is bad. Next time it happens, check for voltage at the coil after you press the RUN button. If you don't have 12v, check the ignition module and EHC.

EHC FREE!!!!

Yep - went through the same thing with my 04 chopper. There is a thread on it. Moespeed has good advice. I would also ask the guy at Strokers to ride the bike for 30 miles. If it is like mine, he won't get more than 5.

I replaced the EHC and it ran for about 3 miles before it quit again. I ended up replacing the ignition (put in a Crane Hi4) and a new coil. I rode it for about 15 miles this weekend without any problems - well, except my balls were frozen solid.

"My K-9 appears to have a one piece cover. Not sure how to remove it"

Didja figure out this little problem? My '07 does have 2-piece cover. 2 aluminum "plugs" pull straight up from rubber "bushings" and the cover just falls away... Used needlenose pliers with angled jaws to pull the plugs.

Amazing I'm going through this as we speak. They've already replaced the cam sensor/plate twice. Just got off the phone with them, they noticed that the first part from Big Dog was rubbing on the sensor plate. I don't have a clue what there their talking about of course, can only repeat what was said. So now they replaced it again and spaced it with shims to prevent contact between the piston or cam or something from rubbing on the sensor plate. Their also replacing the ignition mod. I dont know if I'm using the right terms, I only have understanding of deisel and regular engines. I hope this fix's my problem, I just bought it in sep. and only have put 175 mile on it, this is the 3rd time its been back to the shop. Latez

Engine Quit Again Today!!!!!!!

My K-9 EFI quit againt today just like last week. Plugs don't fire and still get a weak hum sound from the fuel pump just like before. There must be an intermittent bad connection that somehow causes loss of power to the ignition module. Everything works, engine turns over fine, just no plug firing. Dallas Strokers pulled it off the trailer last week and it started up fine, no problem. If I new how to get the one piece battery cover off, I'd see if I could check the connectors between the EHC and the ignition module. Does anyone know how to remove the battery cover on my 2008 K-9? Thanks.

if you take away the cranking part of it, what is left is weak fuel pump and no spark.
no spark could be 1) bad coil 2) bad wires 3) bad plugs 4) bad EHC.
weak fuel pump 1) bad EHC. 2) bad wires

only got 2 things in common.

good luck.

[1] You could have a loose EHC interface connection....
[2] You have a loose connection feeding the engine crank sensor which feeds into you EFI Module as far as feedback to tell the coil to fire
[3] Your engine crank sensor died...or is breaking down when hot
It will turn over but not fire because it does not know when too...the EFI module is not getting any feedback
[4]You have a bad relay which feeds the fuel pump, coil and O2 sensors
Food for thought anyway...

I think there's a loose interface connection and will let the forum know what I find. My experience so far has been the dealer's mechanics can't fix it unless it's broken in pieces in front of them. Not sure how far I'm willing to go with this disappointment before I dump the Big Dog experience permanently!!!! My next bike won't be a Big Dog that's for sure!!!!!!
