Good morning folks. First post on the forums, so please be gentle...
A buddy bought a 2006 Pitbull for a paltry $3500. I'm getting it road worthy for him. Tons of electrical problems, including water intrusion into both the Tach ring and stock speedo, which means no speed reference while riding. I have a digital speedo on the way, simply due to the water intrusion, but testing the speedo sensor reveals no signal. Using a Hantek scope. Verified 12vdc and ground good, ground lead for the scope goes to the black wire, probe tip on the green wire, have it rolling the wheel over at about 5mph supported on blocks with a crane backup. No signal. Already pulled it and cleaned it then re-installed, but no signal still. This is with the sensor plugged into the wiring harness.
Also, I checked the wires into the Speedo, since they seem to have a tendency to break at the circuit board. All three are firmly attached. Ohm'd for continuity from sensor plug to speedo and less than .3 ohms on the signal wire and good poswer and ground readings.
So.. can't find a source for the Sensor. Any ideas?
Also, a source for the tachometer ring, if anyone has them. This one has a burnt capacitor and questionable IC's. I cleaned the corrosion with alcohol, but it's dodgy as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure a repair shop could replace the bad parts since it probably only needs a capacitor and good cleaning, but that's another adventure.
Soo, TIA. Any sources for these hard to find parts would be appreciated.

Is there a good ground? Please check with multimeter. Not simply power and resistance.

Thanks for the replies. FYI I am a 5-time ASE Master Tech with an AS in Electronics, 2 years of Mechanical Engineering, 10 years Military Spec Avionics in the field (Marines), and was writing code in BASIC and FORTRAN back in 1974. I also do C++, HTML, Cobol (yuck), Arduino and other coding in my spare time. I'm retired for 9 years now due to an injury, and dabble with this stuff on the side for the fun and a little left over spending money.
But it's always nice to see people reminding a person to double and triple check EVERYTHING. I didn't know about the Drop Box option, but I'll use it extensively from now on if I have another project bike like this one.
In answering my own question, I went to the local Harley dealer (Riding High, High Point, NC) and talked with the Parts people. They were very helpful and I walked out with the speed sensor of a 2006 Soft Tail Part# 7443D-00D that physically matched the one out of the Pitbull. I had to splice the plug for the old one onto the pigtail. After installation a quick run with the Dog supported on 4x4's verified the sensor works with the stock speedometer. So... THAT problem solved.
Now on to the drop box to check out sources for the LED Tach ring. Thanks much for the help and advice.

Vacations on Okinawa for 2 tours . .3.5 years total, NAS Glenview with 14 Dets to NATO in 2 years, Cheerless Pit, Lejeune, the Stumps, the K, Philippines, Oz, Diego Garcia, and all sorts of other 'things' that won't be declassified until 2040+. it was a very busy 10 years, back during the Reagan era.
And as for KANSAS. I grew up in Ponca City OK... Love the flatlands and all the wonderful weather. 110 in the shade and you think it's normal. Ahh the memories.
Anyway, the Pitbull is almost back together. Still waiting on a reed switch for the front brake lever, but it looks like this thing will be at Bike Week next year. the guy needs to paint it. Someone took a knife to the tank and fenders. . .put POS on the rear one under the seat. Wonder if it was an angry GF.

Pretty sure knothead has the tach rings. Just seen a post recently about it. Unless he already sold them out

I'll probably ride down as well. Long haul on a Ducati 1199 crotch rocket, but his tank will have him stopping every 100-120 miles, which is tolerable for me. He has a whole group that comes down there with him. if I come it'll be my first time. Looking forward to at least trying to do it.Hope to meet the owner at Bikeweek next year. Semper Fi my friend! Thank you for your brave service and welcome to the group! I am fairly new myself, but I can tell you, these guys in here are freaking AWESOME! There is a ton of knowledge and there is not a question about big dogs that we don’t know the answer to or can’t figure out. And unlike a lot of groups I’ve been involved with, all these guys are more than happy to help, me included! I have had problem after problem with my dog ever since I purchased it a year ago, but thanks to this group it’s now running perfect and all my issues have been resolved. That drop box link that savages posted above, is hands down the best tool in the box, it has LOADS of good information! But I’m happy you got her going, and hope we can help you with the tach, I am having some issues of my own with my tachometer, it powers up and functions, but not correctly. Most of the time the lights are just chasing back and forth and I can’t gage an accurate reading. I’m not so great with electric so I’ll be following your post and hopefully I can get some insight as well to have mine fully functional whether I just need to clean the circuit or what idk. I’ll try your alcohol method, I did use electric connector cleaner ands didn’t help so we’ll see. Again thank you sir, best of luck to you!
Electrical cleaner is basically glorified alcohol or an analogue chemical equivalent. It should work well for cleaning things. I use Alcohol because that's the 'MilSpec' way for cleaning electronic solder joints and board, unless you do a Freon bath or ultrasonic cleaner.
