Dreaded ticking noise, Not the vent tube

Thanks. I gotta get in there with a magnet and get it out , clean it/ replace and then go from there. If not I will look into the areas mentioned. Thanks , will update the outcome(s).
Crazy sound... almost sounds like something rolling around under the cover. Learning as I go here and have to check if I have TP's or S&S boxes.
Probably get to this tomorrow, too tired tonight. But, I will take some pics as I go too.

You have the TP boxes. Here is a pic of S&S

Damn it man! I got the TP's ! LOL.
Ok, i went back in to remove the screen and "oh s@#T!, that's not a screen!" Apparently I'm learning slow, it was a valve of some sort, put that right back in. BUT, as I put it back I leaned on the rear pipe and it rotated on me. So, I tightened up both pipes. The rear exhaust was loose as hell. Let it run for 5 and got NO ticking, just sweet sound of the engine running as should. Too hot to take it out for a ride but I'm 99% sure that was the culprit.
So, I hate bothering you guys with questions, but what did I take out? And where is the tappet oil screen?
I took a pic and put colored dots on so it's easy to point out.... I took out the one with the red dot. Let me guess, I should have been at the green dot?
Thanks again guys!

Well, my luck1% to be wrong. Ran about 20 miles today with a couple buds. Sitting at a red light, my bike just smoothly died. Sat in wonder, and started back up and got into a parking lot. I shut it down and it only fired on one cyl. Shut it down, restart and ran fine to get home.
Something is way wrong. On the way home stopped at a custom shop who is 2 weeks til I could even leave it there. He heard something not right but said couldn't really figure it out until it quit or it's apart.
Sounds expensive. Thinking that with this occasional one cyl. misfire combined with a wierd rattle that sounds like its inside the rboxes, should I venture into mild tear down? I've never done it before but am an auto mechanic for cars and have the S&S manual.
Was thinking it may be either rocker arm bushings or pushrods out of adjustment? Would this make it stall and occasional misfire? I have a week off next week so, this would be my time if I'm going to venture into it.
I would be confident in going as far as that, but would need to have someone do the bushings. I guess if I did, I need some new seals or gaskets?
As far as the misfire, new coil and plugs, battery, vreg, rotor and stator, oil change and filter, checked the tappet oil screen/crankcase oil screen (clean) less than 100 miles ago.
Ran fine after I left the custom bike shop, I didnt want to get off it, but didn't want to trash it either.
So frustrated that most shops around me won't work on big dogs either because they are
"too long for their lift" or they have wiring problems. Original owner said he did rip kit and I was given paperwork on wireplus with the bike. Not sure if that is the same either.
Limping it home, one bud with BRAND NEW fat bob tried to race me. I said "tried". So, its gotta be something stupid.

You got a week to tear into it. Just remember, parts is parts. Car, bike, tractor... if you can wrench on cars you got this. Just keep posting and folks will keep helping till you get it sorted. Good luck andd hope its something stupid.

Still waiting patiently for the shop to have time to work on my bike. Today I replaced the coil and igniton sw as it had a ground down coil with a sportster sw. 8n sw (Junk) , will be revisiting that as soon as I get everything else straight.
But I ran it for about 15 min.s to see if it would stall again. It did, but this time I was paying attention and listening. The tap gradually became louder, normal for oil temp. But it didn't Stop getting louder. Then it got the wierd rattly sound, almost as if something fell off inside the rocker box and immediately shut off.
This time, I didn't bother trying to start it back up, something is very wrong.
Sounded like the rear cylinder.
Anyone have similar issue?
I love my bike, but it's getting harder to stay in love with her.

Starting to line up my ducks. Bought some s&s boxes and going to get s&s rockers, shafts and new lifters. I've been told that rollers will wear out the valve stem tips faster than standard and see that there are different ratio rockers. So... I called s&s today and asked them "what is supposed to be in this engine?" Quick response was rollers @ 1.625. I wasn't asked what cam or any other questions.
Does the ratio sound right to you guys? I'm looking for correct geometry, reliability, longevity and just correct build over any hp gains. Do I need to know what cam I have to define what ratio rocker I use? I will do the rollers as recommended by them, but I'm on a tight budget and can do this only once especially when I think there are more issues (wiring/module?} .
And also, what are your opinions as far as s&s lifters vs. fueling?
Thanks in advance :)

Hi BadCo, I just noticed you were from NJ. A good shop and former Big Dog dealer Creative Performance in Wall , Monmouth County. Bill is the owner.
I read through your issues with top end noise and stalling. Just a thought but you may be combining two issues. A possible cause for stalling and misfires could be a defective crank sensor. When the engine warms up it can cause intermittent or total failure until it cools down. Pull the sensor and clean it and look for metal. It's right by your oil filter. If it's intermittent you may have to replace it to know for sure if that was your problem.
Sometimes we get pulled out of focus by problems that could be related so we go down the rabbit hole.

Thanks Mike! I'm in Morris County and unfortunately have no trailer. There are a couple shops by me, but claim to be too busy or the lift is too short or they just plain don't want to work on Big Dogs. Tired of waiting and depending on someone to fix it for me so I will be in a bit of a learning curve with the help of a friend who is well versed in bikes.
Found a few issues going through it, probably not related but cracked vacuum cap on carb and wire pulled out of connection on rear Comp. release.
Gonna go fix those and clean off the crank sensor. See if I can at least get the misfire gone til I get the rest of the valve train together.
Thanks again.

Call Black Hills Custom Parts on Rt. 46, Rockaway, N.J. 973 983- 0200 Ken Puzio.
They can handle any problems you might encounter, or have. They also have a dyno.

I was told by the guy who is helping me out that they are about the best around here....and... I've been there and they are one of the few that say their lift isn't long enough for my bike. They were very friendly and helpful in things I've purchased there.
I was a bit disappointed.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm better off doing it myself rather than taking it to ANY place that doesn't want to work on it. I'm going to use a milk crate! Sit my aS&S down on it and get er done with pride and save myself from a fat labor bill.

Good thing was, crank sensor was super clean. Bad thing, LIGHTLy pushing it back in... the bolt tab just crumbled and cracked off it was so dry rotted. Glad it happened now.

You must have good karma that was a nightmare waiting to happen. Since it was in such bad shape it may have been the cause of your misfires and shutting down problems. If your luck holds your bike will run well when you get the new sensor. Then back to the noise issue.

I had the stalling problem. Turned out it eas a EPA sensor. Symptom was like vapor lock. Pulled the sensor and problem was solved.

Got the boxes and just ordered sensor from HDM. Ordering up the lifters and rockers tonight. Shafts will be ordered tomorrow along with block gaskets. Goin with rollers again as I may want to swap for bigger cam in the future.
Still gotta deal with the ign. sw. issue. .. Wire plus can't use original ign. sw.??? Lookin into coil/engine/sw mount in aftermarket for this if not. Anyone change theirs out?

Had it running for an hour with none of the issues. Rode it for about a half mile (didn't wanna push today). Have to take her out next weekend for a bit (if I can get the gas cap off now).

Still going to swap out the TP's , but hopefully it's not because I have an issue but just to avoid one. Glad that sucker broke going back in.

Thanks guys!
