Dead 07 K9

Hi folks,

I rolled my 07 off the delivery trailer on Wednesday and haven't got any manuals or info on it, and I did a search and can't come up with the exact problem.

After two days of riding it is completely dead, I thought I had a bad battery so I bought a new one and charged it up and installed it, nothing. I got power off the battery to the module, past the module I have little power, like 4V or so.

There are no dealers or anything for Big Dogs where I live so any help would be great, this sounds like the EHC but without any info and about 3 days of experience with it I am not positive.

I am looking at the Thunderheart site to see if they got the part that I need but I am also at a loss for the part numbers.

Any help greatly appreciated, Thanks.

After two days of riding it is completely dead,...
So it ran before but doesn't now? What changed?
I thought I had a bad battery so I bought a new one and charged it up and installed it, nothing.
"Nothing" as in no lights, no crank, etc.? Or just doesn't start?
I got power off the battery to the module, past the module I have little power, like 4V or so.
Where are you measuring this?
...this sounds like the EHC...
Sounds like you're a "jump in the deep end of the pool" kind of guy? :D

What part do you need? I'd do a little more troubleshooting before you start pissing away your hard earned cash!

Nothing changed, I rode it to my shop, I shut it off and went to get back on it a couple of hours later and nothing. Dead, no lights no nothing. Like there is no battery in it.

We measured power coming in to the plug in, 12.9 volts. Coming out of the module there was like 4 volts. No power to the coil or ignition.

I have been reading and found all sorts of things but I can't find them. Things like in line fuses, a reset button, etc.

I think we eliminated the other things, my buddy said the same thing you did, don't go blowing a bunch of cash when it could be something very minor. I bought a battery right away because when it was delivered the other day the battery was dead as a doornail.

Thanks

Disconnect the battery and see if you EHC will reset. The inline fuse is a 40 Amp fuse that replaced the CB (circuit breaker) to the battery. It is located under the seat near the ignition module. If you see a little gray box under the seat close to the battery around the area of the ignition module, then yours still has the CB. When BDM had a recall on the VR's they replaced the CB with a 40 amp fuse. They removed the CB and replaced it with a small distribution post where the VR hooks up to and on to the battery with said 40 amp fuse.

If the voltage regulator was or was not replaced for the recall-the battery will go dead while you are riding if the VR is not working properly (happened to me on my '07 Mastiff)...and it will be dead as a doornail as you said (and I had put in a new battery too). Check your VR while you are troubleshooting. Good luck! You'll find it.

Finaly gave up and took it to the shop mabe its my ignition? Order a wire plus now need 6 to 8 weeks for them to make it. Called Big Dog to see if they had a PDM they siad they dont make it for my bike yet.

12 volts on the way in? How and where are you measuring the 4v on the way out?

I would check to make sure that the ground on your EHC is tight and to the battery. Second I would double check your igntion switch and make sure that functions properly.

I had the same thing happen... turned out to be the black wire (from the battery to EHC) had broken at the connector on the battery.
We measured power coming in to the plug in, 12.9 volts. Coming out of the module there was like 4 volts. No power to the coil or ignition.
Specifics brother! From what connector to connector? What pin numbers? Etc.... I promise you won't be going over our heads with any answer you give!!! :D

The circuit breaker (or inline fuse) is only there to protect your battery from a runaway VR. It has nothing to with the bike being dead assuming your battery is already charged up.
I think we eliminated the other things,..
Such as?

Got give us the nitty gritty if you want good help...

I don't think this was mentioned but you need to load test your batteries first.

I have a Triumph 790cc engine that always runs great for years and then out of nowhere I go to start it and it goes click. I can be riding to work, all over the place, and then go to the grocery store & when I come out there is that I quit on you click. Then comes the push start or call for the truck and trailer. This particular bike doesn't even give me the "Hey I am getting weak" sign by a slow crank.

Anyway, it can easily be a bad cell but a load test will identify this quickly. Unless you get the rare case of the intermittent bad cell which I did once. It can be good one minute and bad the next.:bang:

I also agree on checking your connections. I recently put longer bolts on my battery connections with lock washers and haven't had any issues with them coming loose which is common (At least so far I haven't).

I checked the power and ground going into EHC marks 12 volts. Not sure on how to check the ignition switch
The ignition switch is going to be a continuity check. It grounds the EHC to turn it on. So, disconnect the connector under the Gas Tank, hook up your ohm meter to the side going to the key switch, and check it out. There is also another JST connector under the ignition cover. I don't know why two connectors were put in. When you cycle the ignition key switch, jiggle it around real good to see if it affects the ohm meter reading. I replaced my connector under the ignition cover with a DTM deutch connector just to see if it was the JST connector.

You have to take the Gas tank off or raise it up to get to the connector tie wrapped to the back bone. You could just take off the ignition switch cover and check that portion.

I got a brand new battery and checked the power going into the braker and out got 12.5volts. When i checked the plug going into the EHC i got power going in. Dont know how to check the ignition switch

I now have 8 volts coming out of the blue output wire.

Batteries have been tested and checked, I have a tester at my shop.

Continuity on ignition is good, only 8 volts going to ignition.

No LED's on the EHC light up. I can't figure out why I am getting 12.8 on the plug in and 8V going out.

Checked every connection, nothing broken there.

I will get a pic later. Thanks again.

Mine did it to and I have a PDM .... giggled some wires and BAM the ignition switch clicked on.... oh and also youll lose the right side turn signals....

Take seat off...
Turn key on
hit run button
Then listen for the Ignition Switch to make a tick sound... it will have a red light come on...
should start...

Ive always checked the wire connects first...

Hope it it gets resolved for ya!

You can get an owners manual on-line and a service manual can be purchased at http://www.bdmperformanceproducts.com/

Make sure the CRIMPS are tight on the large and small wires that go to the battery terminals. Pull on them! The battery post wires should be installed with the largest gauge wires closest to the terminal posts.
