Convert 5 to 6 speed

The wife and I went for a ride with friends yesterday, around 180mi total. The 5spd is good for about 70-75mph, after that she really starts ringing my bells. I've looked at just replacing the 5spd with a 6spd, but have also seen the retrofit 6spd kits. My '00 Bulldog's trans came loaded with Andrew's Gears; how well would a retrofit set of gears hold up?
Other option is either a smaller rear, or larger front pulley; finding a smaller rear to match the wheels would likely be impossible. Hell, I can't even find a nice seat for this thing!

Has anyone done a retrofit 6spd kit?

That's kind of odd. My bike will easily cruise at 70 to 75 and has more than that in it. I wonder what gears you're sprockets are.

It has plenty more in it; I think 75 puts it around 3k rpm, but the vibration beyond that is no good for more than a few miles (unless you enjoy 10min of tinglydick once you stop). :oldhardlaugh:

I would think you could get a Ultima 6 Speed to work no problem on that bike. I have a Baker 6 speed on my 2000 Vintage Sport Chopper. I believe originally it had a Andrews 5 speed. You could check with Barnes Performance Cycles he could for sure let you know about the retrofit.

Could be you have another reason for the excess vibration @ 3000 and 70-75mph. Wheel balance for one. This is a link for some diagnostics you can use to check a few things.

Thanks for the flow chart! I'll check some things on there. Tires should be OK, using DynaBeads in both.

Do all Dogs have solid motor mounts?
