We are going back to decades, but I've noticed every factory virgin clutch pack has the cut side of the steels facing the pressure plate. the Honda CBX has the pressure plate installed first and those show the cut sides facing in or to the pressure plate. Even early Harleys showing a stamped 'out' facing you or the pressure plate.
Simple explanation is place the palms toward each other as if praying to the pressure gods. Pressing fingers against each other shows resistance. Place palm over the top of the other hand. Move all fingers forward. Kind of see the steels have memory for direction?
So, when installing steels have the cut side face the pressure plate when installing. If you can see a friction pattern of a round side and a cut side, face the cuts toward the pressure plate too.
Same ass problem upon assembly with new oil at set oz's and still is a pain with the same exact problems, then change out to new frictions and steels. Same deal changing tires, chain and sprockets, spark plugs, and fork seals are changed as a set. Half new, half old, you'll just wear out the new faster using the old shit with it... sans the spark plugs.
