clutch slip stock

At what point (hp) will the clutch power be compromised? I had some work done last summer and now the clutch is so stiff my knuckles crack when I pull ti in, this will cause undue wear to some parts and possible carpotunnel to me. I would not say this build is that huge that this would be needed. from what the mechanic told me this was done: 10.5:1 compression,2.02 valves, .600 cam/springs mikuni 48 mm carb ,intake to match all ported and polished, crane hi-4 ignition. The power is good but wouldnt put pinks on the line,it wont fry the tire rolling in 2nd gear, in the past I have put down some good power (jap bikes) and not had the clutch that this has

When was the last time you lubed your cable and lever? If it's still the stock unit then it shouldn't be that hard.

all is lubed and good also has low miles (2100) that is the reason for the ?? I like to do my own work but the motor was tore down to nothing for waranty work and "they cut me a deal" to fix the head issues and add power with it.6203.35 covered 3717.72 my cost for upgrade parts no labor(except machine shop) Just trying to be preventive on more $$, spend 2 now save 5 later

No. The reason for the question was your comment of your knuckles cracking when you pull the clutch lever in. That's why I asked if it's your stock clutch cause it's not that hard to pull.
Just cause your bike only has 2100 miles doesn't mean the cable is lubed. It's three years old now and could be very dry. I lube mine about every 3-6 months. You also might want to pull the tranny cover and make sure your ramp & ball assembly have lots of grease in them as well as the pushrod.

Later,
Ray

There was a clutch spring change in 2005. My buddy and I happened to be at the factory, and he asked one of their test riders if he had experienced any clutch slippage. He said that there had been some complaints, particularly when people opened them up some with the Mean Mother pipes and less restrictive air cleaners.

They took us back to their R&D department, and showed us the old spring and the new one, which was noticeably thicker / stiffer. When we got back home to our dealer, we had to explain it to them and give them the BDM numbers 'cause they hadn't heard of the upgrade yet.

The new spring did take a little more pull, but hardly what you're describing. I believe that stiffer spring became standard in all following bikes, at least until this new easy-pull clutch came out this year.

It still sounds like a good lube job might be in order, like Raywood sez.

Just to let you guys know there is a soft pull clutch kit available from Drag Specialties for RSD bikes with the Baker tranny that retails for about 50 bucks cheaper than the one from Big Dog.

It will work on any Big Dog '05 and later and they also have it for LSD models which would be any Big Dog '04 and earlier, it does exactly the same thing that the one you get from Big Dog does.

Really - $50 bucks? They tried to install the BDM one on mine and they had some problems, actually the clutch was stiffer than my old stock one.
The BDM kit inlcudes a different spring plate and clutch pack. BDM said send it back to factory so they can look at it - possible bad spring plate.

Do you know what they include in their kit?

this one replaces the inner and outer ramp assemblies, and it gives you about 40% easier clutch lever pressure, and it works really well with the heavy duty spring that Big Dog uses.

BDM uses 3 different spring plates... Silver, Black and bronze color. Each has different pressure... I've had all 3. I forget what color is what, but I have the softest one now and it's a piece of cake - even in heavy traffic.

The BDM kit says 25% reduction...

Next time you're at a BDM shop go to any 08 model and pull the clutch. They all have it.

The Baker, I think, would be the way to go because it's a company you can really trust and does their homework before releasing any product.

Lisa got an easy pull in her sporty and that was a ball and ramp kit - can't remember who made it now but she got it at Las Vegas HD - made a big difference - She wants me to put one on the Heritage now that she is riding that - I'll be in for one on the dog soon but just bought a new exhaust so it will have to wait

it's more than likely the same one i'm talking about, they offer it for sporty's and big twins, it's called a Muller Powerclutch, it is really effective and very simple to install
