Cluch slippage with new cam?

Mine was more so on my 05 after the clutch basket upgrade. I have a feeling after reading Patriots post that they stuck the heaviest spring in there. My 06 feels inbetween the early 05 weak spring and the updated 05 clutch basket spring. Pure speculation but have ridden many miles on all three springs.

Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! (you can sing along if you like. :D )

The factory techs I talked to pretty much confirmed my story. All bikes past mid-05 should have the stiffer spring. If you have one that has just gone past warranty, you are experiencing the slippage, but did not get the newer spring installed, I would sure talk to your dealer and BDM about - they have been very reasonable about such things in the past, and this has been a well known problem.

For example, Raywood's 05 is long past warranty, but they are doing several updates (not the clutch) to his for no charge, while he is at Daytona. They want happy riders.

On the other hand, they will probably want to know just how much you are hopping it up, to potentially cause the clutch slippage - they do keep an eye out for people that seriously abuse their rides - but I don't think that's what we're talking about here.

By the way, clutch slippage would be a function of high TORQUE, not necessarily high HORSEPOWER - it's all about the "twisting force."

Regarding clutch pull (Bushman, et. al.) - the new spring did indeed make it feel stiffer - but it would basically feel the same as any stock 06 or 07 - very managable, I think. If you consider it too hard, then I'd take Gas Man's advice - I believe a direct quote would be, "Lube the crap out of it!." And then there is the whole 2008 "easy-pull" clutch that has been discussed in other threads.

P8RIOT,
I am not sure exactly when it was manufactured in 05 but I bought it in Dec 05.

I am interested to know what you find out and if it is possible to get the stiffer BDM springs.
Get a spring for an 06 and up BD part number 120-000007-00. For some reason known only to the motorcycle gods, when they started using the 117 in 05, they turded it out quite a bit to pass emissions so I heard. They must have used the weakest spring available so that the lever would pull easy. Cam em up and change the pipes and the only thing smokin was the clutch! Never understood why they went to a bigger engine, smaller carb with restricter plates, and weaker valve springs.:loony: :loony:

Alot of the 05 bikes needed a new clutch basket or a stronger spring as the boys have covered. A clutch will slip the worst under heavy load. High gear, low rpm. Roll on in 3rd or 4th from 2000 rpm will do it if it is going to slip. I have never had my 06 slip a bit even with the .600 cam.
Is this info correct?
My primary chain is clunking in 3rd gear only as far as I know as though the clutch is slipping and the chain tension is then being slammed around. The clutch is a new BDM clutch with less than 500 miles on it from the winter rebuild. I was coming from Nashville dropping out a waranty part on the back roads and everything had been fine. Went to pass a car in 3rd and hit it and the bike started jumping or lunging and you could hear the primary chain slapping. Mine you after this it does it when I am in 3rd gear now and no other gears.....
The bike does a good amount of torque over 140 tq the last time I checked.

I am going to start a new thread on my issue with it slipping or clunking in 3rd.
Thanks as always in advance to everyone....
Neil
