Cluch slippage with new cam?

Had my cam changed out recently to a 600, and it finally got warm enough to test it out. I swear at around 90, the clutch feels like its slipping. Has this happened to anyone else after cam change?

Probably need more spring pressure on the plate. One thing you could do is a burnout like chuck does should be able to tell then!

how do you put more spring pressure on the plate? Do I need to put in a clutch pack? Help! Is this very common, or am I just imagining things?

Mine slipped after the .600 as well. Mainly with a passenger. Extra 100 lbs. make a big difference under power with the stock clutch.

Bandit fixed it good!!!

I'm surprised that the 600 cam would generate enough hp to exceed the stock clutch... Having one put in now.

The stock BDM clutch can come with 3 different spring plates, silver, black or bronze - each has different pressure. But personally, I would go with a bandit.

I have the 585 with the super E for a couple of years now on my 05 chopper. I also always had this weird feeling that the clutch was slipping or the valves were kind of "floating" under hard acceleration when approaching 75 MPH plus. Sounds like a somewhat common problem. Is the clutch kit something that a reasonable handy person can accomplish or does this require a skilled mechanic?

btw, this is what makes this site so good, having the technical recommendations and feedback from our members.

I have a buddy who bought a new 2005 Ridgeback back then, and when he put on the Mean Mother pipes and a new filter, he experienced serious clutch slippage. Our local dealer was stumped.

As it happened, we were going to Wichita that week, so when we got there we asked one of their test drivers. He confirmed that it was a common problem at that time, aggravated when people upped the torque with more open pipes.

He took us to the back of the warehouse, where he introduced us to their Director of Technology - who happened to have clutch parts spread all over the counter. He showed us the old clutch basket, and then the newer clutch spring, which was considerably stiffer.

From there, they took us to the Manager of Warranty Affairs, who agreed to ship the upgrade parts to our local dealer.

By the time we got back to Washinton state, the dealer had the new parts, but no idea why. We explained the whole process to them, and they installed the stiffer clutch spring - no more slippy. We also encouraged the dealer to get tighter with BDM, cause they were so great to work with - and they did just that - great dealer we have.

As far as I know, the factory installed the stiffer clutch in all the bikes after that - sometime mid to late 2005, as I recall. When I'm at the factory next week, I'll ask for an update.

It doesn't surprise me that there are still some 2005's that experience slipping - probably all you need is that stiffer spring from BDM.

P8RIOT,
Thanks for the info and the possible cure. my bike is now out of warranty. I am not sure exactly when it was manufactured in 05 but I bought it in Dec 05.

I am interested to know what you find out and if it is possible to get the stiffer BDM springs.

Thanks again for the quick reply.

I will likely need this same information when I get my 05 back together.

I would expect the clutch and belt to be the week links once you get North of 100 hp to the rear wheel.

surely the belt won't be a problem at 100HP? I'm having the Woods .650 cam put in mine shortly along with getting the decks done and I have an 05 so it will be interesting to see how the clutch holds up

Alot of the 05 bikes needed a new clutch basket or a stronger spring as the boys have covered. A clutch will slip the worst under heavy load. High gear, low rpm. Roll on in 3rd or 4th from 2000 rpm will do it if it is going to slip. I have never had my 06 slip a bit even with the .600 cam.
