Clear covers for pegs, grips, etc

Awhile ago I remember a thread on chrome or polished foot pegs, shifter/brake pegs, and handlebar grips, and how to keep them from getting scratched up from use. One poster mentioned clear tubing so I went for it and here is the results:











Tubing from Home Depot 1" ID and 1.5" ID, maybe $20, tubing cutter $12, and heat gun (already had). Cut to length and push on. If too tight heat up with heat gun and work onto peg. Tube wall is probably .125" thick. I have no idea if it will scratch up over time and look like crap or yellow out in the elements but it has done the job for me so far.

now all you need to do is encase the bike in a tube so it dont get scratched or for that matter ...even used.......
what is the use of having a bike if you aint gonna ride it???cause the minute we start riding 'em they are gonna get dirty and scratched and broke and busted and what not....well unless you are a proprietor of a museum...........IMO they are worse than having downtube stickers or reflectors........what on earth will you do when the tubes get worn or scratched or for gods sake hopefully not slip off when riding and you wreck..............come on now......................

Wow, you guys are hard-asses. If I had those footpegs I may try something on the shifter peg in order to try and keep my boot from getting all bunged up put the tubing on all the rest is a little.....interesting.

Ha ha ha!!!! Tough crowd!!!! Just so you know I'm aware of the point of your comments since I thought it reminded me of when I was a kid and my parents 60's style living room furniture that was encased in clear plastic.

However, from a practical standpoint it is protecting the parts. I don't think it's mandatory or a badge of honor to equate scratched parts with riding. I think you can have both. Also, for those that are interested in my experiment, grip is fine on pegs and shifters, no slippage, and the hand grips are definitely more comfortable for me rideing since I don't wear gloves and vibrations seem to be insulated.

In person, you pretty much can't see the covers at all, which was the point. As I stated, if they get scratched up or yellow it takes 1 minute with a razor blade and I'm out $20 so no big deal.

Since I opened this can of worms are there any other, meaning better and/or depending on your viewpoint, less hideous ways to protect your footpegs or do they not get chewed up as much as I think they will? All my bikes always had some sort of rubber inlay, completely knurled, or a bit more practical in design. Thanks!

I think I just answered my own question and solved my questionable taste in foot peg decor. I'm going to get rid of the tubes on the shiifter and footpegs. There is a CHANCE that they don't look very good. When/if they get messed up I'll just throw them in the lathe and resurface them or just run the knurling tool over the whole length. Problem solved. I still like the hand grips though........

So, thank you BDM members for your unvarnished, straight to the point, and honest opinion on my experiment. In some strange twisted and self abusive way I appreciate it. :cheers:

Thanks Shovelcowboy! I appreciate the advise but I had a nagging suspicion they looked like crap right after I put them on. I'm keeping the hand grips and passenger pegs because they are smooth and you don't see them at all but the scalloped foot pegs look weird. I have hung out here long enough to know I'll get the straight scoop when I post something. THANKS AGAIN!!!!

I don't know about the pegs but that living room furniture covered in plastic that could only be used at Christmas was bullshit.:roll::roll:

you could get condoms & rubberbands to protect yout bike:roll::roll: might should get the non lubed ones.. :lol: I got the same looking foot pegs I have no issues with my feet slipping off....

Eric..so do I. But I do not have plastic over them when I ride. Do you ride with the plastic covers on? Would that not eliminate the rough part of the
pegs that are supposed to help with preventing slippage?

You're likely to accumulate grit & sh#t under those plastic casings, which could cause more damage than leaving the chrome exposed.
Just ride bare-footed and you'll avoid scratching the footpegs....just kidding, of course!:lol:

Seriously, any time you go out on the road you run the risk of getting dinged by a rock or pea-gravel flying up off the pavement. This is normal wear & tear.

I like to keep my bike in great shape too, but not at the expense of not enjoying it...."all you can do is what you can do", as Yogi Berra used to say!

Don't sweat the small stuff...enjoy it (and life) while you can!:cheers:

I roll with mine uncovered.. I dont wrap mine in rubber...:lol:
