Cleaning the primary screen

Ive removed the primary screen and found the hole is smaller than a BB. No surprise it plugs up easily. I looked through it to see if any light would show. I was kidding myself. I tried to blow it out with my compressor, waste of time. So my question is, how do I clean it out. Being old school, I want to just soak it in gas for a day and blow it out. Brake cleaner maybe? Recommendations please. Thank you.

I took mine out, left it an hour soaking in some oven´s degreaser my wife had lying around and then just rinsed it with water, let it dry and mounted it again.

You talking about the little square filter that is on the inspection cover? If so I replaced my o-ring with a flat gasket and threw that thing away!

BB, mine is on the inside primary cover. But yea, same screen. So if you run yr bike without it, then whats the sense of having or cleaning it?
On a side note, does this effect the starting in any way? I dont see how the primary could create pressure.

The primary fluid heats up it can bubble and it creates positive pressure enough to build up and push oil into the starter housing if the vent gets plugged.

Not sure what you mean on staring issues ? It can oil up your starter and cause starter failure.

Shouldn't be any pressure there, is a vent on the inner housing and no it shouldn't affect starting unless your jack shaft seal is bad and the starter is full of oil.. I think all it does is catch some of the crap as fluid falls across it, i haven't had one in mine for years. I change my primary and trans every other oil change.

Thanks for the input. I guess Ill just stick 'er back in then. I R&R'ed my starter with my 2nd one. I checked both units and they are clean and dry. One even had a groove cut in it. I believe thats the one I bought from Shovelhead Kicker a few years back.

What fluid & amounts do you use in all 3 places please?

Mobile one in the motor, Amsoil in the trans and STD HD Primary Fluid (non synthetic) in the prime.

The primary vent is actually a check valve to relieve pressure, that's why you couldn't see or blow air thru it, and it only gets installed finger tight, don't ask:angry:
