tried and tried to turn over not a good thing I am sure. Any Ideas on what to try now?
I'm still of the belief that if it's trying to turn over and not able then your battery just can't support it.

How old is it? Have you had it load tested? You could have a bad cell in it now or more. Or it's just time to replace it.

What did you clean those contacts with? They need to be as smooth as possible when you're finished or else they can easily arc and get stuck together or just not make a good contact.

Emery cloth is good way to get them clean but then I hit them with something like 600 or finer grit to polish them up...

starter trouble

I took the starter off my bike (04) and took it to a local starter shop. It had a small wire that went from one of the cable lugs to the coil on the solenoid broken. Good repairman at the local starter shop soldered it, all good. I still think your battery ain't getting it done though. Good luck.

did it work before you cleaned it?if so back track your steps probably missing something:)

If the starter solenoid pulls in and cranks the starter when the starter button is pressed while the solenoid cover is removed, then something is going wrong when the solenoid cover is installed. If the battery works then, it should work later, Perhaps the cover screws are causing a problem, the cover is binding on something or you put the contact parts back together a different way.

You said you repaired a wire form the EHC. This sounds wire like the solenoid power wire that is used to kick in the large starter contacts you cleaned which provides a high start current path to the starter motor.

You say the bike now just clicks when you try to start it. I'm not sure on your bike if there is a relay used from the EHC to operate the solenoid, but that may be what you hear clicking and not the solenoid itself engaging. If it's a relay click you hear, then you're not getting power to the stater solenoid and your loose wire fix is not correct.

Start at the beginning and eliminate possible problems as you go to the starter.

Good luck!

when you push the solenoid in manually it will bind up if you dont push it in straight, been there done that.again if it worked before you took it apart you need to back track, must of missed something.i always say if it aint broke dont fix it or maybe if it aint broke dont break it just sayn, keep us posted:cheers:

I got it! the bike is running thanks to all who helped. Eric is the man he helped me through this and all of you who gave me advice it was appreciated. This is embarrassing but thought I would share with the group so if there are any other knuckle draggers out there hopefully this will help them. I have a scorpio alarm with a ignition kill switch installed and after using the volt meter to test the battery 12.6 (good) tested the wire that plugs into the solenoid "nothing" so I decided with help from Eric to run a jumper wire from the + battery to the solenoid and sure enough it started to crank. Now this is what got me started thinking about the alarm and ignition kill switch decided to grab the pager and turn the alarm off and hooked the wire back to the solenoid, fired the bike up on the 1st try When I disconnected the battery to do the starter maintenance it set off the ignition kill switch. Hopefully someone can learn from my "bonehead mistakes" Knowing my luck I will depend on the forum for all the great help. I am a beginner but I hate having anyone else do work that I should be doing! Thanks all for your time and effort.
