My carburetor keeps draining out of the over flow tube when I turn my bike off, it's a 09 Mastiff
I don't want to sound stupid but could it be the float is sticking any help is much appreciated

More than likely, either that or the float is not set right. But if it was fine then has recently started leaking, then the you can try and clean it but honestly, the best thing to do is just get a master rebuild kit. It has all new hardware and seals. It did not take long to do the work. Watch the S&S video as you need to be careful rebuilding the accelerator pump to not pinch the diaphragm.

Many riders have learned from early on (me dirt bike days in early teens) that dirt, sediment, worn out parts, vibration and out of adjustment all contribute to gas coming out of the overflow tube -- a never ending problem! that will come and go, from all the above. So always turn OFF the fuel at the petcock when engine is not running. Fixed or Not.

…and Yes, try to fix the root cause!

Try this before you rebuild.
Fire up the bike then turn off the petcock and run till it dies.
tap on the carb afterwards.
Turn petcock back on and fire up and see if it still happens

I have to do this once in a while with my Mikuni on the other bike.

aint a big fan of rebuild kits, seems like it is not a "rebuild" ( no jets, just gaskets)
usually a flooding carb only needs cleaning of the float valve, (or slight adjustment)
If your accelerator pump is ok , then just service it , then see what you got .
plus 1 on the turning off the petcock.
my 01 still runs good , never been "rebuilt"

Each to his own but if I am taking the carb off the bike and going that far, I am taking it all apart. Especially after 14 yrs. Plus I did it because I wanted the 90 swivel elbow fuel inlet. I also found lots of gunk inside so for me, it was well worth it. All the screws are new, all the seals, all the check balls, springs, the over flow tube was nice and clear, so it is more than a few gaskets and seals. Aside from the jets, the carb is basically new (oh the float is not included in the kit but mine was good so I left it). I did also take the time to do a little polishing on it (not full blown polish, just enough to make it shine).

I'm with you, if your going to pull it, rebuild it at that age, especially with all the ethanol were forced to use these days!

1. When I turn the petcock off, does the gas stop flowing? Pull hose off either end to see if the petcock needs attention.

2. With float bowl off, turn petcock on, lift float to see if the fuel stops flowing.
a. Debris between needle and seat.
b. Rubber tip of float needle damaged.
c. This is a full lift up of the float to test a float needle.

3. With float bowl off, raise float so the float looks level with the top of carb's float bowl contact.
a. This means if you can see a gas line etched at the float, level that gas line in a horizontal position of that gas line.
b. This means the float is more or less level without using a float level tool. No gas should flow. The float tang does not need adjusting.
c. This means if the the needle can stop flow, move tang up, level float and see if fuel stops flowing. Too much tang bent up will not fill bowl.
d. This means you have to eyeball the level of the float, note the fuel stops right at the horizontal line.

4. With petcock on, bowl on, upright bike so carb is level.
a. This means you turn the petcock off, lower the bowl and note fuel level in bowl.
b. This means if the fuel is running out of the bowl when removed, debris might be the cause.
c. This means if the float can stop flow, the tang is too low with a high level of fuel in the bowl.
d. This means there is an indent/divot at the tang to needle contact. The recess lowers the float needle, the fuel is higher at the bowl.

Take the carb off the bike and take it to John Sachs racing. He is in Florida. Let him do his magic on it. Money well spent.

Funny - I had same problem for 1st time on Saturday as well. I have never turned off the petcock on any bike I've had. This is the first leak. Bike ran badly yesterday after the leak, so definitely carb problems.

As Jersey Big Mike said. Run the carb empty. Cost you nothing and may well move the shit particles from bowl. Been there, done that. Fixed the problem.

On one of my dirt bikes, I drained the bowl, took the fuel line off, opened the drain valve and sprayed carb cleaner into the fuel inlet. This cleaned off the float valve and all better.

Yep. Flushing out the carb sometimes does the trick. You can also leave carb on the bike, take the bowl off and spray some cleaner up there. It to may solve your problem this time.

Search wise, I chose this title for someone who is running down carb problems. You'll need to search his cleaning vid, but I was more impressed with the WD40 and the attic story. I'll watch for those long poles hanging out of a pickup truck, have a package of cookies and a small container and see what happens if I approach a pool guy. Might even try it on the kitchen tile grout, add a little vinny and baking soda. Talking about baking soda...
