bump stop

Hello all,

Do any of you know if an '04 Chopper came with bump stops? If so, do you have a picture or diagram of where they are located? Reason: occasionally, I will "bottom out" which I know because the rear fender makes contact with the wheel on the back edge of the fender and towards the front, the fender contacts the swing arm. I plan on having my shocks "freshened up" at Works Performance (my bike has just over 11K miles on it). I spoke with Tim at WP and he was telling me that for my particular shock, there wasn't much he could do as far as stiffness or rebound due to the rake of the Chopper model. He was certain that I should at least have bump stops on the bike though.

BTW, I'm not a fatass, but I am 6'2" and weigh 230lbs. I believe that when my wife is riding on back is when this happens. She's 5'2" and less than 115 lbs. :D

Thanks!
Paul

I have an 04 Mastiff and experienced the same problem, so bad in fact it tore my rear wiring harnes apart.

I ended up putting progressive shocks on, I used the shocks for a '04 HD Soft Tail. No problems since and no more bottoming out.

Look down behind the oil bag and fender and you should see them. Two rubber stops that the upper part of the swingarm contact when it bottoms out.

At least that is what it's like on the 05's. :D

I'll see if I can find a pic of them for you.

Hey Chris,
My ride height appears to be normal, at least from what I can tell. I looked at my shocks, but don't see where I can adjust the ride height.

It is a pain in the azz but your can remove the rubber stops and install a couple washers onto them so they don't thread down as far, then the swingarm should not bottom against your fender supports. like the other member stated, you may also be able to adjust your shocks so you get a little more ride height and it will make it a bit stiffer as well.

so I could go to HD and get a set of '04 softail shocks and they'll fit my chopper?

You have a regular softtail frame so shouldn't be no problem but me personally I would have (if you have the time) send mine to Works and have them re-valve them to my requirements.
A lot cheaper too.

hey Ray dont you have a pic of the shocks and where to adjust ride height?
To my knowledge 03-05 didn't have adjustable shocks. I think they started in 06 and don't know about earlier years. My 03 Mastiff didn't have them and my 05 Choppper doesn't either.

Pics of the installation/adjustments are in Gas Mans thead on rebuilding his bike after wrecking it. I think it's called Phenioux or something like that.

I think that's part of the problem, I don't think I have the rubber bump stops. I'll look again to be sure. It appears that some kind of work was done on the bike cuz my shocks are painted the same color as the rest of the bike. I'm told that they came from the factory with a black crinkle finish. So, I guessing that whoever put the shocks back on the bike wasn't a stickler for detail, hence the bump stops being left off...

Interesting. I'll run down now and take a pic of them so you know what you are looking at. The shocks are wrinkle finished from the factory!

:2thumbs:

Here they are taken by looking up under the rear fender up behind the battery box (your oil tank on your bike).
