Broken of bolts on the luggage rack

Also I would like to retract my 3 might hold it, it probably will unless you have end up putting a good amount of weight and hit a good bump in the road.

Basically I'm saying don't stick with 3 bolts too big of a chance of needing a paint job on the fender.

Well I got two of them out but there is one really stubborn one. The cobalt bits worked pretty well on two of the bolts but the last one it only drilled a little ways in and now it wont bite at all even with a new bit. It needs to be a little bit deeper for the easy out to bite real good.

Is there another kind of drill bit that will drill into the steel better than the cobalt?
Give us another pic of where you are at now with it.

Haha I'm a one man band, just was thinking about it and I while I think it might work, I just know I wouldn't be okay with it so why even suggest it to someone else if it's not something I would do?

I suppose I'd ride with 3 bolts if it happened to break on a trip or something because I would be stuck but I'd be fixing it as soon as I got home.

I am also an anal asshole so that could have something to do with not running with 3 bolts..lol

Just so you know Eric I was not taking that advice because it would just bug the hell out of me also. I don't see it as being anal I see it as being a perfectionist. Which to a lot of people means were anal.

does that hole for that bolt go all the way thru (ie can you see the other side of the broken bolt (been too long since I have that luggage rack to remember)
If so there are some other options.

I wouldn't do three bolts but that cause when I load up the luggage -- I LOAD up the Luggage! That's why I really like the Ginz -- it's welded on, no little sissy bolts.

But bny the same token, in a pinch I've been known to get very creative -- First K-9 sissy bar wasn't in stock when I bought it. Had a trip that I had to have bag on back -- went to lowes and bought some PVC pipe and made a luggage rack -- made it thru the trip (apprx 180/miles each way) Sissy bar came in a week or two later.

Ah, the alden drill outs would probably be able to get it if you go slow although if you've made the bolt too hard with heat you might burn out the drillout on the single use.
You can buy individual drill outs and not the entire set of 4.
If I were you, I'd try and find a drill press and a vice.
Clamp it in the vice mount vice on drill press
That way you can keep the bit straight and centered.

You can always buy a cheap set of drill bits from Harbor freight -- if they burn out/break -- who cares compared to new luggage rack.

You must not be reading posts. I got two out and the last one I had to drill out because the easy out broke off in the hole. Just going to use a helicoil in that one.

No, I read it.
I've used drillouts with patience and a lot of work to remove a TAP from a hole/bolt combination in the past, so it can be done.
I ended up with damage to the original threads but I was working in a hotel parking lot with en electric drill and was pretty pissed off and had lost my patience by that point but I got it out and used JB Weld to fill the damaged spot (bolt still gripped, even with the 10-15 percent thread missing from the circle.)

Helicoil will work and I've used them as well.

Good luck with whatever you do.

When I tore my bike down for paint, I found one broken. I assume it was like that for a long time. Rode two up, luggage, no issues.

I am not recommending just FYI.
