So a couple of Sundays ago I got on for an early morning quick lap around the bay while the wife went shopping.
The first thing I noticed was a during a couple of accelerations it stuttered a bit around 4,000 RPM, nothing major just felt like a fuel delivery or carb sputter.
Then I stopped at a red light and was suddenly engulfed in a cloud of oily smoke. I thought damn somebody's car is F'd up good, looked around for the source of the cloud, then I looked down and all that smoke was coming out of one of my exhaust pipes. I instantly killed the motor and rolled the K9 off the road to a bank parking lot. I hung my head in disgust and walked to the nearest store and borrowed a phone (of all times, left mine home being charged). Wife came and fetched me and I returned with the truck and trailer and got 'er home. I had to leave the very next day on a work trip, so there she sits at home broke while I am 2000 miles away.

I'm guessing top end snafu, rocker arm, spring, valve or something along that line.

I will note this, I have had a few concerns with oil level. See I park my bike in a trailer and the trailer is at an angle so the transition of the ramp will not scrape the bottom of the bike. I have noticed that after sitting like, I can roll the bike out onto a flat surface and even after running briefly the oil level will appear low. I have then added small amounts oil and checked later after riding and the level is now above the full mark. So I have then had to extract the excess out. It seems like the amount I remove to make it right is about the amount I added earlier because it looked so low. :loony:

Any ideas from you smart guys.

Sounds to me like you may have too much oil going in.

If i leave my bike with out starting it for 3-5 days, and then check the oil on the dip stick it says "add oil".
BUT
If i start her up till she's warm, shut her down and let it sit for a min or so i have the correct level.
My old EVO did the same thing.

If it is running ok, and you haven't blown a head/bas gasket, maybe valve guild gap.
You crankcase vent may also be blocked.

Plenty of easy checks there.

Could also have sheared the key on the oil pump. If it sheared the key, the oil will go to the sump and then get dumped out the exhaust. I have seen it happen before.

Interesting! I have always wondered why those different level readings.... I tend to keep it on the low level. I will follow this.

going to take a stab here. To me it sounds like you are burning the excess oil you added. I could be wrong but the sump will pick the excess oil up and it ends up into the engine which would cause the black smoke to roll out through the exhaust. I would do a completed oil change and run the excess oil out. Just trying to help I am sure some more techs will chime in..

Sounds logical to me Paul,

My understanding has always been that when a motor is fired up and running the level of oil is going to be low because you still have oil circulating in the motor (It has not full come down to the pan.) that would be the reason to always check your oil when the motor is cool and while on level ground.

So with what Paul has said, I would drain the oil and refill to specification, then take it from there.

A k9 has a oil tank (which is higher than the sump) when the motor cools some oil will drain to the sump. :zz2cents:

Usually if you overfill a S&S engine with oil it will puke it out the breather vent. I'm no expert, just trying to help. :2thumbs:

Since the vent comes off the rocker boxes it would be difficult to overfill the engine oil to the point that it comes out of the vents.
The only way to burn oil is for the oil to get past the rings or the valve guides and seals, unless you are sucking it from the crankcase (rocker box cover) vent into the intake. Usually the valve seals are a gradual thing. If you break a ring it can be a sudden thing but generally if either of these things happens, the compression escapes out of the combustion chamber instead of oil getting in. Compression escaping past the rings increases the pressure in the crankcase (and rocker boxes by way of the pushrod tubes) and pushes oil vapor and oil into the intake by way of the vent hose.
What can happen is that your rings get so dirty that they stick after sitting for a while and you get enough compression leaking by to build up pressure in the engine.
If your oil drain passages and pushrod tubes are gunked up and restricting oil flow back down to the crankcase, then the oil will build up in the rocker box enough to be sucked out the vent.

Thanks everybody for your input, I will do a little investigation when I get home in 2 weeks. I am pretty sure when I looked down the heavy white oily smoke was only coming out of one pipe..... forgive me I was so saddened I kinda lost it and can't be sure. I had to leave the very next day so I just got it home and put it away. Really........ I didn't even get mad, a grown man nearly 50 years old.....I just wanted sob like a bitch. :(

Anyhow enough whiney baby crap. I'll be home in a couple of weeks and I'll look into the advise Ya'll had and update with what I find.

UPDATE FINALLY

Ok between a few scattered work trips and just plain ole neglect, a little time got by on me but I FINALLY got my bike fixed.

I did it the easy way and took it to a shop. I do all the PM and have replaced the starter, adjusted clutch, and the such, but I am by no means a skilled engine mechanic. So I took my dog to the vet for a professional evaluation and repair. I won't say they are "friends", but I have know these guys for quite a while and I believe they are honest and reputable.

Seems I broke a valve guide and damaged the valve seal in the front cylinder. The shop did a top end rebuild for me on both cylinders and honed the jugs. Got me all back together for $570. Oh and replaced a throttle cable that snapped on the them (haha better them than me....)

Does that sound about right to you guys? It is typical to do both cylinders?

On a happy note I rode my bike Saturday after having been out of commission for over a month, and though it was with easy "break in" RPM's it was WONDERFUL to be riding the bike and not pulling it on a trailer. :2thumbs:
