Blown Head Gasket on a 124

So on another thread, that subsequently got hi-jacked, I mentioned that I had a Blown Head Gasket in my new to me 2007 K9. It was not under load at the time, but was warmed up when it blew. I think it just failed. Well it failed miserably!!! No oil leaks and internally no visible damage. Piston, rocker arms, push rods, rocker plate, etc. All look to be good. I was lucky!20160927_221019.jpg

You can't win with these wankers JR! :nonod: They are like Lions waiting for the attack, as soon as they have the prey in sight, bam!
Your lunch! :oldlaugh: Anyway, all kidding aside, I had one blow on me due to not torquing properly, I forgot the additional 1/4 turn on all the bolts after the torquing sequence, rode about 100 or so miles and it blew, did the whole thing over again and no problemo! Good thing it happened now and not at Daytona!:old2::cheers:

Wow...... Well, throw a new one in there and torque it properly.
No.

That is one of the worst engineered gaskets ever made. I would highly suggest to stay away from a composite gasket like that. You either use a MLS style, (multi layer) or a copper gasket.

I beleive the kit I ordered from S&S has a copper one.

Looking forward to retirement
With my Ultra Classic, when I put it together a few yrs back. Remember Kendal Johnson did the head work and all the recomendations to generate a shit load of torque out of an 88'' EVO. We ended up with 10.5-1 compression. I blew the rear head gasket within 2 weeks of the rebuild. When I replaced the head gasket yes I used a copper one and also tore the front down and replaced it before it became a problem. Since doing this, there has been no problem.

Be sure to check the installed height of the cylinder stud in the case. You need to be sure a stud is not trying to pull out.
Lightly oil the head bolt and washers, and also the head bolt threads.
I use 10 ft. lbs. on first torque, then 20 ft. lbs. on second go round, then a quarter turn.
Also use a Cometic or S&S MLS type head gasket.

Thanks John for the tips. I ordered the S&S kit. Just arrived today. Fingers are crossed all goes well!
