Blow base gasket

Blown base gasket

Well I knew it was coming sooner or later (would have preferred later since it means I will have to pay someone to fix it, working 7 days a week and only get to ride here and there at night). I took the bike out for a hooters bike night run to harass the local mammary gland augmentation restaurant staff and noticed my front cylinder gasket was poking out just a little bit but no oil leaking. Well after pushing the bike about 60 mph over the posted limit coming home on I-12, I still had no oil leak. Well I opened the trailer to see a few drops of oil on the floor and running down the bottom end...... So as she cooled and shrank it started leaking. I did push my luck last night by going out knowing it could blow, but there is a bartender I hadn't met yet that of course would want to ride after getting off work :spank:. Well Ms Nicole didn't ride but we do have dinner plans Tuesday :D

Well I bored you will all those non-important details to ask what else I should possibly look into for some minor mods while the motor is apart. Keep in mind I am looking for minimal down time as it is perfect riding weather.

Currently looking at the following:
1. Thinner gasket kit to bump compression
2. New exhaust (I love my pipes but I can no longer stand the excessive decel pop and boot burning, mainly the boot catching on fire part)
3. Stronger springs on my bandit clutch
4. Polished and port my heads (the shop here in BR does it in house so minimal down time)
5. Not sure what springs I have so when they get it apart I will see if I need to change springs
6. Insert your suggestion here

Any other suggestions, comments, grips or informative info you can pass my way would be greatly appreciated.

Also wanted to thank MoeSpeeds for the offer of helping out with sending me info for a tear down but I just don't have time, See ya in a month man.

Currently looking at the following:

1. Thinner gasket kit to bump compression

Go to Comatic (440-354-0777) and ask them for 0.010 Cylinder base Gaskets (part # C9935 ) for a S&S Super Sidewinder 4 1/8 Bore. And 0.030 Head gaskets (Part # C9931) for the same engine. Deck your head 0.030 and get the bigger intake valves 2.02 and bigger exhaust valves 1.615. With this combintation and the above gaskets will bump your compression to 10.5 without having to cut the cyclinders.

2. New exhaust (I love my pipes but I can no longer stand the excessive decel pop and boot burning, mainly the boot catching on fire part.

Decel pop could be running lean, adjust your carb or change jets.

3. Stronger springs on my bandit clutch

4. Polished and port my heads (the shop here in BR does it in house so minimal down time).

5. Not sure what springs I have so when they get it apart I will see if I need to change springs.

You should have the Red Line Springs which are good for a 600 lift cam or you can get the Wood W 188-1200-10L which are good for up to 650 lift which is what I run.

6. Insert your suggestion here

Any other suggestions, comments, grips or informative info you can pass my way would be greatly appreciated.

Good Luck with your rebuild, Hope the Bar Tender knows how to push a bike if you don't already have a Wire Plus.

I agree with Carlos, I just did the same on my motor because of the rear cyclinder, you have it torn down, you might as well deck the heads, and change the springs, if needed.

Keep it stock....keep it reliable!
I like to mess with stuff way too much, I know I am playing with fire by going this route, but it will also push me into buying a cruiser and keeping the dog for just poker runs and 3 am burnouts in downtown Baton Rouge, but then again the cops on 3rd street are getting terrible................

Good time to think about what cam might suit you... and then an ignition to bring it out. But cutting to 0 deck and head work. Perfect time and john sachs is close I think with good turn around.. doesn't get any better... maybe a xxx carb..I know too much. but dreaming is always fun....good luck......:2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs:

I'll just add that most of the time (from my experience!!!) base gaskets are blown because the motor is not properly warmed up before taking off.:2thumbs::cheers:

Ya he's right I sit and touch the cylinders and wait till there to hot to touch. Then kinda baby it a couple mls. Just like a horse gotta warm him up walk first ml trot 2nd ml do what ever 3rd ml. But sometimes ya just live in the moment. That's usually when ya have ta pay. Peace

:2thumbs:Yeah, it is hard to wait for a 3 minute warm-up per the owners manual prior to riding. I now use Cruise-Mate to warm-up and put on my gear. After about 1 to 2 minutes, I will roll out of the neighborhood and figure another 2 to 3 minutes to major roads.:D

Of bartenders of course, you've seen one blown gasket, you've seen them all.

Sorry to hear that Henry! Keep us posted on the mods!

Oh I figure that is from my "in the moment" times of leaving the bar after it has been sitting for a 4-5 hours and not allowing a warm up ( I know for sure the burnout at the light Saturday night pretty much finished it off since the motor had only been running a few min). Plus I will be the first to admit I like to fly through town since I know all the roads and where the cops like to "hide". It was totally self inflicted, just going to fix it and ride it :2thumbs: I by no means was complaining (hope it didn't sound that way in my post) just saying what I did and asking for a little "more" power advice :D

Brooks you would have seen her already if you had facebook buddy!!!!! But since I like you, I will grant your request. Nicole is the brunette to the left (5'4" should go real well with my tall ass), which I have 3 hours to get showered and not look like oil field trash to meet!!

You won't have to worry about blowing a Comatic Gasket doing burnouts. They are not paper or composite type they are thin metal. I couldn't blow mine out on the 1986 Grand National I had, not even at 25 PSI boost from the T-72 Turbo. :D Car ran a best of 10:80 at 126 MPH 1/4 mile and I drove it home at the end of the day :D

100 % correct. Number 1 cause. :2thumbs:
It takes 7 miles for proper warm up. Motor don't care about what the head gasket is made of either...If not warmed up properly, they will eventually give up.

Carlos, have pity on me next time. I have a red/green color deficiency and that text color you used was just a blur to me. I did however agree and like the comments once I was able to jack with the screen so I could see them. Yellow on the red is fine...

Must be something related to old age.

Some good advice here for sure, I wasn't aware what damages were caused by riding on a cold engine. Makes sense when you think about it. Thanks guys. :2thumbs:

And Henry thanks for the bartender pic, Funny Christy doesn't call me to her facebook to show me such things.....go figure. :spank:

Damn the luck!!! Just explain to her that she needs to show you my Facebook page every now and then to assure yourself and her that she is still the best looking girl out there :2thumbs: :spank::spank::spank::spank: Better yet, it would probably be in your best interest to not listen to any suggestions of mine!!!

Poor paycheck goes to the vet today, but should come back better than new :D
