Best aftermarket starters

Okay, any thoughts about what are the most reliable starters for our bikes? I am in the middle of a rebuild just before I decided to gut the bike it broke down and the Harley shop said my starter was going.

Every time I would try to start the bike I would get a metal on metal grind sound it would usually fire up no problem if I leaned the bike to the right.

This is my 2nd starter compufire a local shop "not the Harley" shop recommended a Harley starter. Said the compifires are shit

Since the bike is apart I decided to strip the starter apart everything looks intact with one exception looks like water had made its way into the starter causing some corrosion.

I think I may buy a new starter and have this one rebuilt. Looking at some 1.8/2.0 starters any thoughts places to look? I know eBay etc....

Good question as I would like to know as well. Once I do my heads I will have a higher compression and I am worried a bit about my starter as it seems to struggle as it is now.

Looking forward to retirement
Spykes 1.8 kW High torque starter. That's what I put on my Dog! Although Terry does make a 2.0kW starter. Problem is every bikeshop in the country carries Spyke's starters, not Terry.

Where did you source it and what was the part # if I may ask? Any fitment issues? I assume you have the stock primary.

Knotso is dead on for 2005 up bikes, get it rebuilt. I can't recommend a Tech Cycles starter, my buddy got one and has nothing but problems with it breaking and bending jackshafts, and 2 broken cases. I'd put an Ultima in any LSD bike, 1.75kw is plenty. The 2.0 goes to a longer housing and I don't like how it sticks way out there with all that weight on the end.

Thanks Moe/KnotSo. I will go that route. I would like to get some alternative sourcing info though for the part cross-reference database I am working on (sticky on Technical forum). Appreciate the feedback on Tech Cycles. Anyone have a model number for a recommended starter (Spyke 2.0 kW or 2.4 kW or others) compabible with the DSSC?

A 1.8 KW Starter for the 04 models are part #:

Manufacturer Part Numbers: 31553-94, 31559-99A,

Accel: 40002C

Twin Power: 46-3037

Terry: #775094

I do not beleive there are any other options other than a rebuild on the 05 and up Starters because of DSSC

Wild Steed Worx is now carrying a heavy duty 1.8kw starter. Clutch and Intermediate shaft are made of Titanium and motor has been tweaked to provide more torque at lower wattage. This starter is only for the Left side drive bikes with a 1/4-20 jack shaft bolt.
$225 with free shipping.
We are working on a replacement for RSD bikes but it will be a bit.

I don't think anybody is building a starter to those specs. Nice work Curtis. You need a tradename for them like "TERMINATOR" or something ???
I know a lot of research and development went into your proprietary design and have been road tested. Start a poll on a name

I didn't forget you Ray hood job
