Beep / Cutoff Syndrome .....after mods

Had a dual coil setup installed on my K9.... Very nice job.

Now I ride a ways and it beeps then cuts out.....

First time It happened the reg plug was potentially not tight..... bike wouldn't even light up....then charged the bat to 12.8 and got to the flash / beep....then the next day everything lit up like nothing happened.

Cleaned my terminals and tightened a couple slightly loose coil connections.... went for a spin today and I made it two miles before it quit.

Then I pulled over and tried the key ...... everything lit up..... and I cruised home......

Mech said EHC right away but I cant buy that as I didn't have a prob prior to the mod.

Appears to be the same one! ;)

A new key switch was added and it isn't real tight in the hole....is this a ground point?

Anybody have this phenomena and successfully troubleshoot it as I also though maybe a bad coil ....but then I would still run on one cylinder? Yah.

Thanks

Randall

This is where you start the bike, let it idle, move the key assembly as it keeps running, see if the switch takes a disconnect and kills the bike.

My first HD would stop running just after things started warming up. Turned out the coil windings were broken and when the coil was cold things were fine. After the coil expanded from heat, there was no spark.

If possible, replace the old parts one at a time.

I had similar a problem. My bike would intermittently blow horn and die any time I use brakes, blinkers etc. Changed ignition switch, battery, checked all wiring etc. My ehc tested ok but since my problem didn't happen all the time that didn't mean anything. I'm down to the ehc as the problem. I will be wiring in the thunder heart soon enough.
Have you noticed if yours beeps and dies when you are using the brakes or blinkers?

How old is your battery, Your charging system may not be putting out enough to keep the battery charged up when the bike is running. Most of the time when the horn beeps it means your battery is about to take a dump or the charging system is not putting out enough juice to keep the battery charged up while the Dog running. I say its your battery, cause a good charged up battery should run your bike for more than two miles. Are you still running the VR Circuit breaker or the 40 AMP fuse, check and see if the Circuit breaker is not tripped or the fuse blown. If whatever you have is Ok, get you battery load tested or replace it. My bet is that the battery is old and not holding the charge.

I have a dual coil setup. the only problem I had was with the key switch. Replaced it and no problems. But yes, make sure it is tight to the bracket.

Key switch will get some scrutiny today Sven
Iman...... think your issue was where I got the idea for a bad keyswitch when you went dual..

I havn't had any battery issues prior to the mod. but it did sit over the winter so a new one is going in after a new switch..... then try a new coil.

Also read something about loose connections on the start switch can do weird stuff..... oh well

Happy Hunting!

Thanks for the tips gang.

When I was having the problem, anytime I used anything the horn blew and bike shut off. It started up with no problem but I had to hit the run button again first. I figured out that for whatever reason when the horn blew and bike shut off it went into air ride mode even though I have a rigid, so the ignition was off until I hit run then it fired right back up. If your bike is starting right back up I doubting its the battery and if you already put in the new key switch I would look into your ehc.

I messed around with the key switch and have not got it to cut out when running..... I had Harley test the Bat and checked out good but will swap bats with my other dog to eliminate any battery gremlins....... then the EHC goes to Curtis.

Swapped bats and rode my other dog today with no issues..... cleaned a little corrosion at my circuit breaker and tightened the Jumper connection on my coils. Time for a test ride.

Will check connections at the run/start switch next.

Cleaned and tightened the battery / loose coil connections ..... removed the connections on the circuit breaker to clean up some corrosion ... ....

.... and spun one of the studs... .... cleaned connections up and replaced the circuit breaker.

50 miles and no issues.......

Figured I would give it a couple days Franco, so I wouldn't eat my words after bragging how repaired my "defective" EHC.

Same story, different bike......I tried all of the above, even replaced the crank sensor and IGN module, same problem........Curtis suggested that it must be the EHC intermittently cutting off...testing the EHC would most likely reveal nothing since it was intermittent. I hope this post doesn't curse me but I've got a 150+ miles under the new RIP and it hasn't shut off one time. Fingers - crossed.
