Bandit Clutch

Low Down Chop Shop
I just found out a couple days ago, now that my bike has the Bandit carrier and clutch, I now have aluminum shavings in the fluid. I pulled the inspection cover the other day to double check the chain tension and there were shavings. I did not do the shim when I installed the bandit, but I did remove more material than Bandit called for off the outer primary cover where they showed to remove for clearance, so I know it isn't that. I may have a rear clearance problem now, may need that shim or grind those locking tabs, I am going to check it out sunday.

I installed the bandit on my 05 chopper also. after a few miles on the dog I inspected the fluid and found aluminum shavings too. I had no shim. they checked it and found the alignment was off so they added the shim and are taking some more material off on the inner primary just to be safe.

doesn't sound good - hope its nothing too serious boys - I'll give mine a few weeks then check it. When I did this I looked at the drain plug when I took it out and there was nothing on there and there was nothing inside when I cleaned it out. I wonder if it could be from grinding the tab on the inside of the cover - are you absolutely sure you cleaned it out completely after grinding?

thats exactly what it looked like - I had a fairly good look at it and it seemed ok - better safe than sorry though
Looking at the rubs, scratches, galling whatever you want to call it gives the indication that the areas that show material removal was high and is most likely due to casting tolerances. The shim is a good fix but the alignment is the most important.

The shim update was for all 2005 & 2006 models produced on or before February 16, 2006. This update (green Service Bulletin) was titled "primary chain alignment" and was designed to correct premature wear on the outer face of the engine sprocket when the two sprockets were not in correct alignment (0.035" or greater difference in alignment). The shim part number is 240-000185-00. When I install the Bandit clutch assembly I plan on leaving the shim in place, making sure the inner primary locking tabs are flush and using some machinist dye on the back of the Bandit hub, torque the clutch hub nut, rotate the hub and then remove to check for a contact patch on the back of the hub.

bandiy clutch

i also changed to bandit clutch, and was quite surprised by the scratches i found. Clearance is an issue so a shim will be ordered.......

I took my clutch off today because of shavings and there was some pretty good scrape marks on the inner primary. The clutch itself seemed fine so I just put it all back together again. I might get a couple of shims. I also stuck two clutch plates together (old ones) with some JB Weld to make it a bit easier next time to hold shit still.

Ironically I was just looking at this today due to having some chips on the magnet when I pulled out the drain plug today...

surfer I took the clutch off because of shavings on the drain plug. I have no shims so I just put it all back together with new oil and I'm hoping the scraping on the inner primary is now all done. I'll check again before too long.

Eric - you keep your BDM clutch hub - you need to get it pressed out of the BDM carrier and into the Bandit carrier.
