Avon Rear Tire

Y'all do have the option to run a 280 if nothing else. Won't look too much different, especially if the Metzelers are running a tad bit bigger... :D :2thumbs:

from the technical data sheets for metzeler, their numbers show that, with our 10" wide rear wheel, the width of the 280/35vr-18 tire is 301 mm. this is good, but, the diameter of the tire drops almost 3/4" leaving us with 3/8" more gap between the tire and the rear fender and about 15kg (35lb) less load capacity. may be a feasible trade-off. their 1st recommended wheel width for the 280 mm is 9.5" so the use of the 10" wheel may leave the wheel exposed to more damage from road debris/curbs, etc.

Give us more input on why you didn't like the Metzler:confused:
Mileage.

Wear was even, but around 5000 klm not miles is not value for money.
I can remember back in the lat 70's- mid 80's if you 5000klm out of a rear you were doing well.

Shit 30 years on you would expect better..................yes????

You are really only running on the tangent/center of the tire radius and as it wears the flat in the middle of the tire gets wider. The tread depth is minimal and its not on a flat surface not to mention the performance levels that they try to manufacture them to, speed ratings and softer rubber to grip the road. I went riding with a freind and he told me when we would pull out from a stop and I got on the throttle, that white smoke was coming off my tire where it meets the road in 1st and 2nd gear. I did not know I was spinning the tire, but it does make sense to me now why I only got 8000 miles out of the original Venom. Avon changed something when they went from the Venom's to Cobra's.
Hard acceleration and down shifting to slow down put a lot on the back tire that is really only running on a very small patch of tire.:moped:
Its really hard with these bikes to putter around and not grab a big ole handfull of throttle. If I see 5000 miles, its acceptable to me because I don't go on long trips. If you put 2-500 miles a trip on it regularly, I would think you would see 10-15000 or more out of them. :whoop:

RETIRED
I measured my Avon on the K9 last night and it was a hair(blonde) over 3 3/8th inches, the Metzler speck for their 90/90MH says 3.62 inches, almost a quarter inch wider. Wondering if they make one that I haven't found that is a little narrower?

Not uncommon with these wide tires. The biggest killer is not enough air pressure and not enough cornering.
This customer rode his bike till the tire blew out on him going down the road :loony: For $300, is it really worth your life and the $30k bike?
On another note, did you ever get your transmission repaired?

The guy with that tire should be handed his sign, there's no reason for a tire that looked like that to get to the point of blowing. Well there would be 1 reason, he's an IDIOT:lol:

Thanks for all the great info guys!! Even going to the Metzeler 280 they still are over $300 and from the sound of it not getting anymore miles out of them then the Avon. Guess I'll go with the Avon again but looks like my riding is on hold for a while til I can get it done and will put brake pads on too while I am at it!

No more riding on this tire would never take that chance!

don't forget to do the wheel bearings while you have the wheels off. save yourself some trouble and be able to align the rear tire only once. :2thumbs::cheers:

even with all this information available, personally, i still don't know what i will go with when the time comes.:confused:

Just a word to the wise, I'm on my 4th and final Avon. It has just about 1500 miles on it and it's starting to split. This tire was a replacement tire from Avon and it to is splitting. Keep an eye on those 300mm series tires, just saying! I wont be using anymore Avons, I'm done!

I know what you mean Brew. I went through 3 Avons and finally gave up. They kept giving them to me free, but I got tired of removing my back tire. Avon finally gave me a refund and I bought the Metzler. On my second Metzler now

I have 5k ( & counting ) on my Avon , still good for the miles that's on it .
I guess I'll go ahead and order another b4 there gone .

I like the tread on a Metzler a lot better than what's on the Avon but I'm not doing any sanding to make it fit or ordering a 280 .

Who else makes 300's ??

From what they are saying the Metzeler 280 is actually spected out at 301mm wide which obviously is actually a 300. Only thing is they run $40-$70 more then what the Avon 300 is.
