Any ideas

Hey folks, looking for ideas on latest problem. Had rocker boxes, heads, pistons, cylinders replaced due to TP problems on 05 chopper. While in there, had an S&S 600 cam and 640 springs installed. Was running great while breaking in the new components and then started to smoke (blue) after a right turn. Dealer found a pinched valve stem seal and replaced. All good and doing well, then tranny started acting up, shift drum replaced and all good yet again. Well took a nice long 200 mile round trip and within a few blocks of home started the blue smoke smoke-screen again after pulling away from a traffic light. Got home pulled the plugs and the front was fouled and the rear slightly fouled. The dealer picked it up and was able to reproduce the problem. The mechanic called BDM and they are thinking a ring failed to seat correctly. I think an oil return hole is partially plugged, allowing the valve stem to be flooded with oil and then sucking oil into the chamber. They will be pulling the rocker boxes off next week and trying to figure it out. What do you guys think? I can't see a ring after 500 miles not seating correctly? Really miss the dog and forced to add more miles on the 05 softail.

Running the stock air cleaner? None of the head breathers are blocked off are they? Is the check valve turned in the correct position?

When changing out to S&S components did you keep the stock rocker arms? Are they S&S?

S&R rockers (roller). The dealer did the work under warranty, will have to ask about the check valve (rear cylinder-to air cleaner?) and stock air cleaner assembly except for K&N type filter. I understand the vac. side is from the front cylinder to the carb intake. would that cause a problem?

I had a problem with my like this also. it was the check valve that got stuck and then the front cylinder was sucking oil in. I had John sach down here in FL do a different breather system and all is good. he blocked off the front and added a breather at the bottom of the case where the 2 plugs are.

I've heard about that approach, any pics, diagrams, napkin drawings? :)

As the posts above note if the check valve is blocked or backwards you will build up pressure and it will push oil out wherever there is the path of least resistence.:2thumbs:

make sure the white ring is toward the back cylinder. (see center of photo)

Excellent info, thanks guys I will get with the dealer Monday and pass on the info before he gets too far and pulls the heads again. 117bigdog, any pics of the two plugs on the case bottom??

Guys, thanks again I just got off the phone with the dealer and the check-valve on the rear cylinder was installed backwards after the heads were replaced. He is putting things back together right now and will be testing it out. You guys rock!

My bike had 2500 miles on it and because oil was going past the valve guides, the rings never did seat even after 2500 miles!!!! The guides started to slightly leak within the first 500 miles on the bike.

Good to hear it might be an easy fix!

Woodbutcher, any chance you still have the pic that was in this post? I only see the dreaded "RED X". My plugs are fouling and I recently had a new upper end on the front cylinder replaced. I'm looking for the check valve and a way to make sure it was installed properly. This probably isn't the answer, because both plugs are fouling.. :bang:

Brad - you will see the valve has a white end and a black end. The black end faces out, i.e. hose from head plugs into white end, then you have the black end, then you have the hose the carb backing plate, or ground, wherever you route it. The rear head only blows so if in doubt take the check valve off and blow thorugh it - you'll only be able to blow through it one way

i looked for an hour this afternoon trying to find that thing and was unable to locate it. i'll keep trying. pretty sure it was a gasman how-to. the check valve should be right behind the throttle control at the carb.
