A lot of times those marking occur. But if they're not too awfully bad, you can usually clean them up with "Scotch-Brite" until smooth. But replacing is the best thing to do though.
But I do recommend using a "Dry-Film-Lubricant" spray on the upper and lower races to help prevent that from reoccurring so quickly. You can buy it at any bearing supplier. Just use a thin even coat. :2thumbs:

Dead, a "Dry-Film-Lubricant", man that just don't seem right. I know these bearings don't spin like a wheel or anything. Have you done this before? This sounds alot cleaner though. This is a buddies bike and we decided to go ahead and change them. We already had the front end tore down and had the bearings in hand.

The "Dry-Film-Lubricant" is only a graphite film. You still use grease. It helps keep any moisture build-up off the race and helps discourage rusting and pitting. That's what it's made for.

Thanks for the info DeadOne. Since there is no seal to keep out the moisture and such, this sounds like a good idea.

My manual says to inspect, adjust, & repack them at 10k miles. As you can see in the picture there is some damage to the bearing races mostly from corrosion. These bearings take a lot of stress and you could feel some popping when turning the bars side to side, so we decided to change them.

How did the bearings look? any problems with them?

The local dealer I had do my neck bearings at 10k just re packed them but I wasn't having any problems

Usually the sign of bad bearings/races are, with the wheel pointed straight ahead you can feel some resistance when gently moving bars left or right of center.:angry:
Extremely common on springers.In fact so common,that I find races are bad before 10,000 miles.
Prolly easier to diagnose with the front wheel off the ground.
