585 is in! Another Question (s)

Energy One

Had the 585 installed finally last week. The bike definitely sounds different and does pull harder. The sound is substantially different. Need to do some more work on figuring out the ignition settings on the Thunderheart.

Have it on 3 now but didn't take the time to change program yet. Some serious backfiring going on at deceleration. And acceleration too. Carb adjustment has been made but may need fine tuning as well.

Another thing- not related to the CAM change- battery is not maintaining proper voltage while running (12.1) and bike is not starting back up once I stop it. No real shocker to us.

The mechanic told me it would be a replacement of the ????? for about 150 bucks and that should keep the bike starting back up reliably.

Any suggestions on this particular part? :bang:

well, there's the battery itself, then there is the voltage regulator, then there is the stator (alternator). start with the battery, how old is it?

Regulator! That's it. Thanks.

The battery is about a year old. I have kept this one on a tender whenever the bike is garaged. Battery lost charge after taking her out on the "maiden" voyage with the new cam.

Rode around for about an hour and parked. Went to start her up about 20 minutes later and battery was dead. Put tender on and it took a day and a half to get the "green" light on the tender. Bike will start up but won't "re-start".

Mechanic said it was the Regulator but could be the battery too. Tested voltage while bike was running and it gave a 12.1. I have no problem replacing either.

Is there a better suited regulator for the BD's. I ride a 2008 Mastiff.

I usually go through a battery every year or two. I keep mine a tender also. Volts on mine are fine but there is a loss in CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) every time. Your local HD dealer should have a machine to load test it.

yep, if you are only getting 12.1 with the motor running, it is the VR. good should be a little over 14.

Well, I didn't see any mention of testing so said components (Regulator/Stator). Why toss money out on parts you don't know for sure is bad... Sorry JMHO... Do a search you will find how to do these tests...:D

glad to hear you have your 585 cam installed. you need to do a sound clip so we can hear the rumble:D
Hey Paul,
If your thinking about it, you must do. Not only the exhaust note is different but the thump on your a$$ is more noticable

Just to add. I put the 585 in my 2008
Running factory supertrapp exhaust with EPA junk removed from the core.
Runs great, no decel pop and has noticeable more power especially in the low end range.
A good choice for those that don't want to cut the heads and get springs to go with the 600.

brew, as many times lately that this has been discussed, i guess i take for granted that testing will be done to all components before anything gets replaced. as a matter of fact, i just replaced my battery and while i was at it, checked the output of everything before i placed the order. common sense. i ain't got the money to be throwing it away.

Thanks for the information and suggestions. I usually state that I am not mechanical BUT THAT HAS CHANGED SINCE MY BIG DOG purchase two years ago. I am just thankful that my EHC hasn't failed.......yet. (I shouldn't have said that......)

cutting heads and replacing springs is required for 600 cam?? I didn't think that was the case. I have a brand new, in the box, 600 cam. Never installed. PM if interested.
I bought it to put in my 2005 AIH 111. opened the cam cover and found it already had a 600 in it.
