585 change

guys, good thread on cams & all that goes with them.
just thinking, what cam came with an early 07 k9?
have s&s tops with roller rockers & red paint springs!
s&s 585 sounds good
If you have the "red stripe" springs make sure there are 3 springs in the "spring pack" an outer, middle and an inner spring. I have seen a couple of take off sets at the dealer that were only 2 springs

The more posts I read on engine performance. The more confused I get.
I want to change the exhaust, carb and go for a slightly more than stock cam I guess. Who wouldn't want more power. But I don't want to hurt reliability. Of course I hate EPA shit on anything. Trucks, cars and bikes whatever. NO GOOD. And then ignition too if necessary.

So i guess It's a 590 or below cam. Choice of carbs. XXX, PSI or Mikuni. R&R Racing LSR pipes.
And some kind of ignition. ????:willy_nilly:

Hey Stryfox. Ordering a 585 for my Mutt as well, but won't get to install till later this winter. If you are doing the install, how bout some pics as you go. Im not a great mechanic but get by with a little help from my friends and Jack Daniels. Unless some body has already posted pics of install, I could not find.

Ups tracking says it should be here today.
I am hoping to put it in on Friday.
I will try to remember to take pics.
I could be wrong but it seems the hardest part is adjusting the push rods.
There are some great how to's on push rod adjustment here.
Any tips from the guys here that have done it to help.
You know, the non obvious stuff?

Where did you buy the cam? If you don't mind, what was the cost? Are you putting in new lifters too? Keep us posted on the install. Thanks

Haha...took cam cover off and just realized I forgot to order a gasket.
Step one. Remember to order gasket and cam.
Step two. Disassemble.

There is two different gaskets for our covers take a look before you order one. Any Harley dealer or aftermarket should have one.

Also did you get some shims with your cam? You need these to have the correct endplay, which i believe is .005-.015

Had some free time so I installed the cam tonight.
It was an easy job. Endplay checked good with the factory shim.
I need to pick up a new gasket tomorrow. I fit it with the original gasket.
The gear seemed to measure out ok too.
Did anyone have to press off the gear and put the old one on?
Push rod adjustment was straight forward with the how-to section on this awesome site.

Just a note and i may be stupid for bringing it up. But if you change the gasket out you will have to loosen the pushrods and re-do the pushrod adjustment. Just sayin.

I was able to remove the cover after the lifters blead down.
Will this really effect the tappet adjustment?
Thanks

went to a 585 over the summer. I can really feel the difference. HP only went up 2 points - from 96 to 98 but the torque went up from 109 to 127
Of all the threads on this cam, this is the first i have seen this number. 109 to 127 on the torque side, that is what i'm feelin' in the seat of my pants with mine:2thumbs:

Ha ha just put it together. I found out what you ment.
Good thing I'm not trying to make money on this one. :)
Hey at least doing it twice I'm sure I did it right. :)

May tins and tank are at my shop in basecoat so I can't run it yet.

I'm assuming everything will work as planed but won't know for sure till I fire it up.
Honestly this was a simple job. Don't be afraid to try it yourself.

did you remove the lifter blocks or how did you hold the lifters up in the blocks while removing/installing the cam.

I removed one lifter block to check the end play.
Even with the lifter blocks in with the pushrods all the way loose. You can just push the lifters up from the bottom with your fingers and slide cam in and out.
With the timing marks line up I only had to hold 2 lifters up.

You can change your stock cam to a 600 cam without doing any changes to your heads or cylinders. There is penty of valve clearance for the change.
