Does anyone know if your coil is bad, that it would cause your thunderheart not to light?
Not related. Ignition gets it input from either the cam or crank sensor.
If you want to check you coil just put plugs in the plug wires and crank it and see if you get spark. Either you will or you won't.

First, there's two lights on the ignition module, the red one lights when it gets a signal from the cam sensor (blinks as the engine rotates) and the yellow one lights when it sends a signal to the coil (blinks when there should be a spark). So, if while you're cranking the bike and neither one lights it would explain why the module never fires the coil. In other words, no input to the ignition module from the cam sensor (red light) means no output to the coil (yellow light) which means no spark.

Secondly, since you have to wait for a coil anyway, here's how you can check to see if you really need it...

Make sure the key is OFF then disconnect the wires from the coil and measure between the two spots on the coil where the red and yellow wires were attached, you should have a low value like 3 or 4 ohms. Then measure the secondary (between the two spark plug wire connections) and you should get a considerably higher reading like 13K or 14K ohms. These values aren't exact but should be close enough to be able to tell if the coil is bad.

Since you mentioned that you have power on both sides of the coil (at the red and yellow wires, right?) that would lead me to believe your number one suspect is the cam sensor.

Hope this helps... :D

on the right side of bike? I pulled the round cover off and nothing is there? Wish the hell i knew more about a cam sensor, cause that makes all the sense in the world why my Thunderheart modual is not lighting up

Take a look at it first before you worry about replacing it! Look at it very closely for cracks, burns, melted areas, etc.

It should still light like I said before. You just don't have the coil trigger light (yellow).

ok after the cover is of now what? I see a wire and another cover with some wierd looking screws. do i take the screws out to remove that inner cover? cause the inner cover is slotted where those long headed screws are. I only have a red light on my thunderheart mosual and it does not light up

The power to the coil comes from the EHC. The cam sensor tells the ignition module when to remove the ground from the negative side of the coil when it's time to fire the plugs. So, if there's power to both sides of the coil primary it rules out the EHC and the primary side of the coil. The secondary side can easily be checked as per my post above.

That just leaves the ignition module or the cam sensor as the likely culprits here. And since the cam sensor fails way more often then the ignition module...

Anyway, that's my :zz2cents:

I wouldn't loosen anything else at this point or you could throw your timing all out of whack!!!

Got a camera? I pic of what you're seeing would be good...

If you really want to rule out the spark plug wires stick a nail or something metal in the coil hold it with your hand, put your other hand on a good ground such as the cylinder head and have somebody crank the bike. If you don't piss yourself its not your wires.

As DRB said don't undo any of the screws under the pickup/camcover nose cone. will cause more problems later.

Where are you located that you can't just go to a dealer HD, BD, Big Twin and pick up a coil?
