2008 Mutt

Just traded my 2002 Wolf in on a new Mutt. Great deal, rebates, etc. After 70 miles I notice something leaking out of the front oil tube, right at the base where the flange is bolted to the crankcase with four bolts. Almost looks like some kind of glue or sealant-kind of a bronze/goldish color. Does not appear to be oil as it is hard. You can remove it with your fingernail. Also appears to be some oil seeping onto the powder coat, not a lot but with only 70 miles this concerns me.Will this settle down after it breaks in? I am going to wash it today and see if it comes back. Will show it to the dealer Friday. Also not really used to the increased rake, this rides like you are operating a jackhammer! Is there some way to lighten up the forks so they are more compliant? On the highway it is great, but on the side streets it bounces like crazy. Great looking bike, but a whole different animal. Grateful to have compression releases, the Wolf stranded me a couple of times and smoked a couple of batteries including one I just bought a few months ago! Need to adapt to the 250,coming from a 180 this makes me look silly going slowly around turns.

Glad to hear about your new Mutt. I have one too. Glad to see that I wasn't the only one about the rough ride. It about killed my back coming back from Myrtle Beach.
I've gotten use to it now. I hope you have a great time with it.

If you're talking about the front pushrod tube. It should have o-rings for a seal, the lifter base should have a gasket. I use anti sieze that is the color you mentioned but don't know why something like that would be used there. You could check the four bolts to make sure they are not loose. They should be torqued to 85" lbs. then final torque of 120" lbs with Loctite 2440.
May also want to look at the push rod tube o rings to make sure ones not broken.

However if your dealer is close by let them check it out :hi:

The front end will loosen up with miles along with the rest of the bike. Keep an eye on that spot after you wipe it off.

Its getting better, now looks like the fork seals are shot after 100 miles! Also some weird spider webbing in the casting on the carbuerator.Throttle cable is real stiff. QC or bad PDI?

If you have washed the bike or been in the rain you can get water in the top cover of the fork seals and it can leak out. Will also show up on the forks as well. I believe the top cover will unscrew and you can check.

My carb has the spider web look which I believe is from the casting process. Doesn't cause a problem.:2thumbs:

Thanks, V. you were right. Fork marks just water. Apparently the oil is coming from the carb and dripping down on the front tube. Left it with the dealer last night, they are going to check the crankcase ventilation.

Supposedly this was just residual oil placed on the element by the factory. It sat in the showroom, settled and oozed out. Has anyone else experienced this with a brand new bike?

I noticed something very similar to what you are describing at the base of my front pushrod tube. Cleaned it up and haven't seen it since. BTW mine is an '07 with about 4500 miles when I noticed it.
