Personally I prefer to just have a separate idiot light so there is no guessing as to whether it is oil or voltage.
If its dark out the last thing you want to be doing is trying to see an oil gauge tucked down by the motor.

If I exclude riding in Daytona for the bike weeks I've been to, I can count on 1 hand the number of times I have road the Dog at night, I don't like night riding on a bike, way too many deer around here.

I believe both are about the same to install, for the exception of the headlight wire on the ESC is continuous (no connector under tank), the functions are a little different on the RIP, the ESC is identical to the ECH. Correct me if I'm wrong on the RIP Curtis.

The Gen 2 is going to be easier, no backbone harness to change out.
But the Gen 2 is slightly different in that either the Hi or Lo beam switch will change the headlight from from Lo to Hi and the Off button is no longer used you simply press the run button once to start the bike and again to stop it. Most simply use the key to shut off the bike though as the TH module maintains the last status of the Run button when the key is turned off so they never have to press the Run button again just turn the key on and hit the start button.

Obviously there will be somebody who says "ohh but you need to change out your backbone harness anyway" but its all tomatoe...tomato.
Like I told Baby Yellow. Look everything over and in the end go with what you feel best with.
Both kits are based around the TH module which is a tried and true unit so you can't hardly go wrong for a basic system.
I know BadDawg....I don't want to hear it.....:D

Curtis, if the RIP 2 doesn't change out the wiring harness, which is a big bonus, and I'm not trying to start anything, just asking, why is it still $675? seems to me it would be a lot cheaper without having to make up the wiring harness.

Like I said in my previous post....LOL.
I don't agree with the big bonus part unless your OEM harness is a total pile of shit then it is a bonus.
I personally like the stock harness and actaully prefer even less wiring like I am designing into my kit for my K9.
From what I understand the D-Sub connector is expensive and the work required to wire up the D-Sub is almost the same as the Gen 1.
In the end I am just a seller. I don't build them or set the prices just buy, sell and install.

I thought this was only with the older rip kits and the new ones keep all the stock functions?

I wired my own Thunder Heart in and spoke with Jason from kmw and he explained to me how to wire the push button converter so that the high beam act as a low/high beam and run acts as a run/kill switch. The Off and Low beam button dont work anymore. Thats how they used to wire the rip kits but I thought you mentioned in a previous post that they updated it to keep all functions?

I don't know anymore people.
I'm working way too many hours and working so many different projects I can hardly keep anything straight anymore.
Throw a new web site in on top of that where all the bikes are broken down by model and year with their prospective parts and you have someone who spends allot of time spinning on their head...LOL

From their web site:

"Introducing the GEN2 "EHC R.I.P" kit from BIG DOG MOTORCYCLES. This kit replaces the faulty Electronic Harness Controllers (EHCs) that are prone to failure in 2005-2009 Big Dog Motorcycles, will also work in 2010s with a small retrofit kit. Fits all models 2005-2009. Unlike other aftermarket replacement kits, this kit is the only true "PLUG AND PLAY" system requiring no splicing, soldering, custom bracketry or new harnesses. Simply remove the stock EHC and the rear harness, mount the new module where the old EHC was mounted, connect the D-sub connector to your exisitng backbone connector, route the new rear harness and make connections and RIDE.

The plug-and-play design significantly reduces install time and the risk of installation error. This kit will maintain the functionality of the stock EHC, excluding the integrated air ride, but is much more robust. Built with an all-aluminum housing and water-resistant connections, the GEN 2 EHC R.I.P. kit will leave your EHC worries Resting In Peace."

So I would have to say yes it maintains all the original EHC functions excluding the air ride system.

LOL....no sweat bro even if you were.
I got thick skin, unlike some here.
I'm not always right, the best, the cheapest and so on but I have my moments....LOL

Beside, we all need to be put in our place sometimes.....

I have not installed the new kit yet, but instructions say to remove tank and replace back harness.....also may need to remove starter. The unit fits in the same holes as the old EHC, so no modifications needed. I asked Jeff what was the diagnostic capability of this unit, he said he simply replaced the computer with a series of relays. Sort of old school way of wiring.....I like this.
