2006 K9 EHC issues

Happy Sunday gentleman, long time no talk to. So now the weather is getting nice again in Central Pa. So I'm having some issues with my Dog. Starts and runs fine, but twice now from the past 4 times I rode it, it died. Like someone hit the kill switch or turned the key off. The first time I got about 3 miles from home on local roads, the horn sounded, flashers came on and it died. Turned key off and back on, horn sounded no speedo, no lights, no starter nothing. Today came of exit ramp from I-180 onto I-80 again about 3 miles from house, felt like it was out of gas, however that was not the issue, flashers came on and it died on the shoulder. I turned the key off, then back on, finally got it to start. Road to meet friends at gas station, checked battery terminals, ground, EHC Connectors A&B both tight. Decided to bale on ride go home and check further. Cleaned A&B connectors and repacked with Dielectric grease, checked for frayed wires, etc found nothing. Checked a bunch of old threads on EHC issues, etc. Some maybe leading me to believe the EHC is going bad. I have an 18 light EHC, but if I understand correctly, they don't just work intermittently, if it dies it dies period. So one question I can't answer is when is each lights supposed to illuminate? if I am looking at it correctly, when running the Controller, Power, and Ignition lights would be lit correct? If I understand correct, with that said, if I press the horn button the horn light would come on etc. The reason I ask is no matter whether high beams, horns, directionals, etc, nothing lights up on the EHC, except for the 3 power, controller and ignition. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've had exact same thing happen to my K9 this spring. My problem started with after a ride I would go out next day and nothing would power up. Replaced ignition switch, cleaned batt terminals and ehc connections, died on me once while riding. Had battery tested by two different places all checked ok. Hoping dirty battery connections was my problem. Talked to Curtis at Wild Steed, he said flasher/horn and bike cut off was a symptom of low voltage. Hope this helps solve our problems

Sand Lap, what did you do to correct the issue? my apologies for my ignorance, I agree with the low voltage thought, but don't know what to do to fix it. I need to get battery bench tested since I only got it last year. Did you replace your battery? Is the EHC supposed to light up, for instance when running and push the directional shout the directional light on the EHC light up, when horn button is pushed should that light, light up? What did you do to fix your problem? Thanks again for the respnnse

Cleaned and checked all connections on battery with brass brush and contact cleaner\ solvent. Also cleaned ehc connectons with cleaner and packed with dielectric grease. A good idea to have battery load tested. So far so good on my Dog. As for lights on ehc....that's a good question I cant answer, but sombody on this site knows the answer. Hope this helps

I am having similar issues and still havent figured it out. Either a short or ehc. Here's my thread to see if it helps you at all.

As far as lights on ehc coming on when function is pressed, my horn light comes on but no other lights( blinkers etc) only the ignition and starter light when pressed.

Your explanation on the EHC, the three lights that are on when it's running is correct. It sounds like the EHC is working properly with Yellow, red and green lights on. So when you use the horn or any other function you should not get a light. If you do get a light it means you have a malfunction. Those lights would be fault lights in this case.

As far as mine goes, I only have one light on all the time and thats the ignition light, what other lights are supposed to be on brew?

Is there a way to check the ignition switch to see if it shorts? I don't have to touch anything for it to die so I'm thinking possibly ignition switch.

I had the same issue recently on my 07 K9. I opened up the right handcontrol and the cable inside that goes to the pcb was a little loose. I pushed it all the way down and after that it has worked without any issues.

Have you checked out your charging system if the battery is ok?

Charging system is fine. I've residents short trips as well in between these two times I experienced the problems

In your case it sounds like you have an original EHC and should have a red light.

Sounds like Ironhorse has a replacement or 07 or better EHC which has more lights:

Red= Ignition
Green= Controller on
Yellow= Power
