I am at my wits end with this bike, I bought it a couple weeks ago ran great, the guy told me he cleaned the starter but the internals were rough and it would need replaced soon. A couple days later I get the dreaded click and no start. I got through the rest of the day by tapping the starter w a hammer and it would fire up. But the next day it would not budge no matter how much I tapped.
So I purchased new 2.0 kw starter, tested the battery… all good. The green solenoid wire only has 1.5 volts when sending power to the starter.. what could this be? The ehc has the red light on, ignition module has red light on, all lights and turn signals work, headlight dims all the way out when I press the starter button. Just one click everytime, never even attempts to start. The starter button is starting to go out also u have to press the bottom of button and slide your finger up to engage starter.
I would like to get a few more rides outta her before winter but idk where to go next testing the bike, I called bdm and they don’t seem to know what’s wrong or have much interest in helping me do any advice would be great. Ty 317-670-8981 my number if anyone can help

Welcome from Kansas. These bikes can be a love/hate relationship. Love em when they hauling ass but then they break. Sucks. You should have the battery load tested. These bikes need a ton of power to start. Sounds like you will need a new right hand pcb switch also. These can be had @ HDM. The new Bigdog prolly wont be of any help either. We'll help ya get her barking again. Put a finger on the rubber cap (compression release) and see if it moves when you key on and press the start button.

The click is the compression releases they are working. It is getting 12 volts to the green wire, apparently my meter was bad I replaced fuse and it read 12v. Already had battery load tested it’s good. But now I got a whole new set of problems, the starter was spinning but not turning over the engine, I thought maybe I had something hooked up wrong and switched the wires on starter and smoked my speedometer. I’ve ordered a new speedometer but the connectors were almost welded together and 1 broke when I get them apart, and there is a wire that still looks burnt on the harness. Do you think they’ll be ok just connecting the new speedo and wrapping it good with electrical tape? …. Praying my ehc isn’t shot. And then after that’s solved I’ll still be facing the initial problem with the starter not engaging the flywheel? What could that be

The new starter may need alignment? Did you look at both starters before installing the new one. Are they the same?

One way of doing the alignment is to leave the starter bolts snug then hit the start button. The starter may move slightly too ingage with the flywheel. Tighten bolts.

Do you think a new speedo will fix my problem or think I damaged harness and ehc?
I would repair the wiring and see what happens before ordering a new Speedo.

Welcome from NJ,

Also it would be unlikely on a new starter but the starter drive clutch could cause your starter issue.

Oh the speedo is fuckd the wires are burnt up all the way inside it I would have to completely disassembled it and literally solder new wires to the board of the board itself isn’t fried. But there’ are 2 wires that burnt all the insulation completely off

This is a plug and play Speedo that is very good but I'm sure your wiring would need to be good. Call HDM and see if they have a replacement wire harness for the speedo. Great people to deal with!!

Yea I’m hoping I can get by with just a new speedo and not having to do the whole harness
I just looked it up and the price is right. You would probably need to pull the fuel tank to install it.

No , Except for military I've lived in NJ my whole life.
Hey , just looked at your pic maybe you'll get lucky if you solder in new wires?

Just my luck, the stinkin connector u sent me is sold out
Different vendor but just as good. WSW and HDM are the first go to for Big Dog parts and recommendations. Call them to ensure the harness will be good for your bike.

I got the new speedo on and loosened the starter, still no power to the speedo so I’m assuming I’m gonna have to replace harness connector, and the starter still wasn’t engaging sounded like it was turning slower than normal and dragging on something??
