2004 S&S Anniversary 117 Questions

Energy One
Anyone know what may be in this motor. I just got this scoot and it does have the S&S Rockers. It's got 3K miles on it. Without disassembling, can you tell if it is the EPA motor with the 546 lumpstick and the small valves? Any thoughts?

To my knowledge :)eek:) the 05 was the only model that came with smaller valves and smaller carb with restrictor plates.

Cams have changed many times over the years though so my suggestion is send the project number to BDM customer service by email and they will tell you all you need to know.

You know that the 117 was a special order motor in 04. Don't know how many they offered but it became standard in 05 but it's changed with the twin cam breather system.

I have the same motor with a April 04 production date. Trust me you will never get a straight answer from anyone including Big Dog. Some say it has 600 cam with no epa restrictions others say different. So since I actually tore mine down I will tell you what I found. It has all S&S components including rocker arms/boxes. It does have the full standard size valves but it had a 547 cam and .040 taller (epa) cylinders. There was a claim that the early production motors may be a non epa motor with the 600 cam but I could not find anyone that could give me a cutoff point on the production dates that they may have switched.

S&S Response on Serial Number

I called S&S and this is what they said.

It has the .547 Lift Cam
The "taller cylinders"
The Standard Heads (2.02 and 1.65 Valves)
Roller Rockers

What do you think? Why would it have the larger valves with smaller cam?

I do plan on taking it down, shaving cylinders, install 600 lift cam and 640 Lift Springs.

Do I need to be concerned with Valve Size? I guess I can check when the Heads come off.

Is there anything else suggested while the engine is down? Flow the heads or are they good from factory with 600 lift cam?

Thanks,

Aaron

Just ensure it has the hi lift springs. I think they are identified by a "red stripe" on them. You can see the difference in my "How To" when I did my topend. There are pictures of both the 05 and 06 heads showing different springs used.
