2003 Pitbull lurching and engine dies

Hi y'all, great forum and first time post.

When I ride my '03 pitbull at highway speeds many times unexpectedly the bike starts to lurch forward like as if she's out of gas. I have to switch to the reserve tank and she continues on her way. This has happened since the day I bought her as a birthday present to myself. Rode her today and had the same lurching problem. This time I kept the fuel petcock on main tank and she died (red engine light went on). Had to pull off, wait a few minutes, set petcock to reserve to restart.

I've taken it to the dealer where I bought the bike and they had techs look it over on 2 occassions and they say the bike is fine. On the first visit they suggested a fuel filter which I had them add, then on the second visit they tweaked the fuel enrichener but that was it.

I don't think that fixed the problem since when I ride it I still notice the problem. The interesting thing is when I check both gas tanks are FULL. Weather was hot around 100 degrees.

I love this bike but have had this problem forever. I told my wife that it can get dangerous never knowing when the bike will sputter and quit.

I have no idea what the problem is, but have read other threads that it could be a fuel vaporizing problem? I noticed that the two gas caps are different (don't know which side is main or reserve tank).

Any suggestions is kindly appreciated!

On my 03 Mastiff the right side cap is the vented one. I had a problem with my cap not venting and this stopped fuel from flowing after about 1 1/2 gallons burned. The dealer said they had to knock the vent out and I never had a problem again. Hope this helps, Jeff

Your bike has two tanks and you should fill both tanks at fill up. One is not a reserved tank. Regular and reserve settings are a function of the petcock. I would pull it and ensure it's clear and clean. Sometimes the tank liner starts coming loose and will clog up the petcock screen.
The petcock is on your left tank and fuel flows from your vented right tank to the left.
Pull the right side gas cap apart and clean it with some carb cleaner to ensure the vent is working properly. Easy to do yourself.
Pictures of it on here somewhere.

Thanks Raywood for the advice! Let me schedule a service check at the local shop and request they pull the tank to inspect the liner.

In the meantime, let me inspect and clean the right gas cap.

P.s., just so I'm clear if both are main tanks and fuel flows from right tank to left then what's the purpose of the Reserve setting on the petcock? Can I leave the setting in reserve and run the bike that way?

You don't have a gas gauge so the reserve setting is your low fuel warning.
The petcock while on main allows fuel to flow till the tank lever get to the top of the screen or where the inner tube is.
On reserve the petcock allow fuel to enter at a lower setting on the petcock.
