2 Start up issues

First off when I hit the start button I get 2 different reactions. #1 starter engagement but no turn over. I release the button then hit it again this time it will buzz like the battery is low on juice, but it is not cuz it is new and above 13 volts. On the third try it will turnover but it is slow to fire. In other words I let the starter spin until it fires. I think the starter might be bad or about to go out, it is the original from 2007.

2nd Issue, when it feels like it will back fire through the carb. That  gets me very angry. The carb set up is as follows D&D air cleaner, 31 intermediate jet, 78 main, air fuel in the middle point, air bleed is factory jet & the acc pump is about 2 turns out. Pluggs look slightlyvsooty around the threaded end and the ceramic is a light grayish color. Also a VH 2 into 2 Exhaust. :bang:

I welcome any input on these topics,
Scott

Your Carb set up sound about right maybe a little on the fat side. I would try the 76 for a while to see if the black soot and gray goes away. The starter my need some TLC. Clean out the contacts on the solenoid, make sure your Pos and Neg cable going to the starter are nice and tight. If it continues you may need to rebuild your starter or send it to Curtis and Raywood they can make it new for you in no time.

I will give it a try this weekend and check the cables. I know I can see bare wire on the right side jumper or what ever its called.
As far as the jets I was thinking of dropping down to the 76. If that does'nt help I might change the air bleed to a larger size.

Thanks

What kind of battery? LiON batteries have a tendency to do that. They gotta "warm" up. Tried one on the Fat Boy a while back and returned it for that reason.

I think there is another thread on here somewhere about this too. Something about our electronics not liking this. And yes it sux

From the Shorai website

Q. I hear that lithium crank poorly when it gets cold, is that right?A.Lithium do increase in resistance more as temperature drops, compared to lead-acid. However, they also react to cranking under cold conditions in a much better way. Lead-acid will increase resistance on each subsequent cranking attempt, until it won’t turn over. If your LFX fails to start the engine on first crank, that first crank has warmed the battery, and the second attempt will be much stronger, and so on until you get a good start.

Shorai LFX are much better in cold-weather conditions than other-brand lithium starter batteries, due to our eXtreme-rate formulation with low resistance. Down to about 20 degrees fahrenheit (-7C) most users find that they can start normally on first crank. If your headlight comes on at key-ON, it is good for the batteries to flow some current before cranking in cold weather. The suggested headlight-on time before cranking depends on the temperature. If starting at 40f (5C), 30 seconds will help wake the battery and increase cranking performance. If at 0f (-17C), leave the lights on for 4~5 minutes before cranking. The result will be a better first crank, and longer battery life. Any other accessories that can be turned on before cranking can also be used for this purpose, such as heated gear, radio, etc...

ONLY use a good quality "MAT" type battery in these bikes and ditch the other crap.

Too many people on this forum seem to have more problems caused by using aftermarket gadget stuff or doing modifications on Bigdog motorcycles than any other issue here.
