Have no idea why I have such a hard time with that THING snapped a bolt again and easy outs are not working
soooo, who has another one I can buy? 300 mm tire and NO tapered ends.
Grade 8 bolts, I thinks the neck on the bolt MUST be solid no threads. Ya know how a bolt can be threaded all the way to the head? ( Not working ) .
ARP bolts someone recommended, rant rant @#$% very frustrating.
Had a great ride the other day though, love it HATE it. Love it , hate it!!!! I'm in a fucked up relationship:willynilly::willynilly::willynilly: with this bike:D
I'm going for a drink.
Damn man! You could bring it by the house here in Salisbury and I could get you fixed up. I got a Fastenal guy that can get the right bolt for you and wont make you buy the box.

Ker, when you cut off the tapered ends what happens when you bolt it into your tapered struts? Are you saying that you just tighten it up until it hits the taper in your struts? How does that work? I am confused as usual, :oldconfused: I would think you'd have to drill the taper out of your struts also, right? :oldconfused: I don't know, I need another cup of coffee, I am still half asleep! Haha! :oldlaugh:
Struts are not tapered. There's a collet in there you can just remove. Then the round stock slips right in.

The struts are the same design throughout the years. However I think in 07 they went to a tapered sissybar with a collet. I think the design was to prevent the bolts from breaking as the collet distributes the load better.

Curious why you didn't just use collets?
I did and when you torque it down you are applying a lot of pressure to the walls of the strut and if you over do it, apparently like I did, it cracked the thinest wall off the strut. You have to pay attention to where the slot is on the collet prior to torquing the bolt.

Some truth to that. The chrome on mine has started to crack.

I don't think I have that "collet" in my struts, or at least I don't think so? As far as I know my struts are tapered and so is my sissy bar so the tighter I get the bolts the sissy bar wedges itself into the struts, I wonder if they changed the design in 09 and newer models? Or, I am just weetaded as usuall! :oldlaugh:
Great pics though Ker! Thanks, that did help explain.:old2:

My 06 k9 doesn't have collets and no tapers on the struts or sissy bar. In 06 some of the k9's came with struts that did not have the slot for a sissy bar. I remember dropping over $1200.00 for new struts and a 12" sissy bar in 07. In 07 they had a recall on some of the sissy bars, something about them being to thin I believe. Around 07 or 08 is when they started changing them up a little to correct the problem of them breaking the bolts. They also had a recall on the strut bolts in 06 and 07. The strut bolts would break also. I've never had any problem with mine and I've loaded a lot of stuff on mine.

If the sissybar you have on there now has the tapered end and the bolt is still in there, try cutting around the bar to remove the tapper, it was .700 on mine and I cut it with a recipricating saw. Make a groove /cut around the bar but not all the way thru it. Then install the bar without the tapers and use grade 8 bolts and torque to 40-45ft/lbs.
When I cut mine off there wasn't any threads in the tapered area so the taper should slide off when you cut thru leaving the broken bolt exposed to turn out

Make a groove /cut around the bar but not all the way thru it and you might be able to turn the broken bolt out with the taper. Or you could grind flats on the taper after you cut it and turn it out with an adjustable wrench or a small pipe wrench. Then install the bar without the tapers and use grade 8 bolts and torque to 40-45ft/lbs
Saw? Not a hammer and chisel?

40-50lbs? No wonder your blowing holes on struts. I believe spec is 25

yup yup
There was a recall for sure on 07's. I remember breaking the bolts before mine was replaced. Think you have a "pre-recall unit" causing the problems.
