07 Big Dog K-9….just quits

My Big Dog starts and runs great, for awhile, then it just quits. Usually it runs for 5 - 15 miles and the motor just dies. After sitting for several minute, it starts up again. After it starts, it runs for awhile, and it may or may not die again. My mechanic says there may a wire getting hot and shorting out…but he is not a Big Dog mechanic. Anyone have this issue?

The crank sensor can cause that problem. Unfortunately there is no sure way to troubleshoot other than replacing it with a known good sensor. When the sensor heats up it can fail and when it cools down it works. A coil can do the same thing but with a single fire coil like your 07 K9 has it is less likely. Check your battery and EHC connections to be sure they are clean and tight first but if it still fails I would bite the bullet an go for the sensor. Worst case if that's doesn't fix it you will have a spare to carry in you tool kit. Good Luck

I DID HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2004,I replaced the crank position today and she started righ up , going to ride her tomorrow to check her out before the snow storm again monday..
there is a way to check the sensor with an ohm meter for sure. If you would like to E mail me I can send you a copy of how to test to see if it is bad…mine would start and run sometimes for only a few blocks and die, start and run again the same way them sometimes would run the rest of the day. I replaced mine ran the test and it failed two different tests…locodriver999@yahoo.com

I had the same problem and it ended up being my whole charging system. Had the rotor, stator and voltage regulater changed out. Never had an issue after that. Seemed like it only shutdown after it was warmed up. I'm running a 124" in mine.
