Battery reads 14.6So I'm only getting 8 volts to the coil after I press the run button. What would be the problem then?
The battery is at 12.9 and when I press the run button I get 9.6 to the coil. When I checked earlier I forgot to unhook the float charger.14.6
I see you have posted on this problem before. What troubleshooting steps have you actually taken??So I'm only getting 8 volts to the coil after I press the run button. What would be the problem then?
Does the led on the ignition blink while cranking the engine? Yes/NoThe battery is new less than 2 months old. I ran a wire directly from battery to coil and still no spark.
It stays solid
bad cam sensor most likely. Cam sensor is electronic replacement of distributor/points -- tells ignition when to fire.It stays solid
I agree with JBM . The cam sensor is the most likely suspect. I'm not sure if the sensor can be tested without a special ignition tester from Big Dog but someone on this site may have that info. You can visually check for melted wires but you may end up just replacing it without knowing for sure that it is the problem. Good news not expensive! It stays solid
Ok I will give that a try then. where is that located and how hard to replaceI agree with JBM . The cam sensor is the most likely suspect. Be certain to mark and replace it in the same position of the removed sensor.
No it's not difficult. This is a link I found on our Technical How To forumOk I will give that a try then. where is that located and how hard to replace
Thank you I will give that a try.No it's not difficult. This is a link I found on our Technical How To forum
Again!!! Be certain to mark and replace it in the same position as the removed sensor. Also disconnect your battery before doing this job and put the bike in neutral so it can't crank the engine by mistake if for some reason the bike moves.
Cam Sensor Change: 2004 Bulldog
First off, this is not applicable to later models as they have a more traditional sensor. The 04's used the old cam sensor under the point cover approach. Why would you need to do this? Well, pretty much next to NEVER unless you're chasing a freak ignition problem like I was. I narrowed it...www.bigdogbiker.com
I'm sure that's what it is. I carry an extra one with me. Like the old Harleys, you had to carry an extra set of points around with you. HDM does carry a solid state unit that fits in the nose cone, but the cam sensor will fix your problem.Thank you I will give that a try.
I ha e the old one out now is there a way to test itI'm sure that's what it is. I carry an extra one with me. Like the old Harleys, you had to carry an extra set of points around with you. HDM does carry a solid state unit that fits in the nose cone, but the cam sensor will fix your problem.
There is, and the procedure is in the manual. But it's only about 75% accurate. I've had many that have tested good that were clearly bad. I am a repair shop, so I see a few of them come through here.I ha e the old one out now is there a way to test it
