03 Chopper: spark and fuel, no start.

Unless the sensor has come loose for some reason, the timing should be ok. Has to be fuel or weak coil. I would start with new plugs, after you check to see if fuel is squinting in the intake.

Have you checked the Petcock? Fuel is on...but is it clogged? I have seen dirt and other gunk get into the petcock and block it or not let the valve operate properly.

@chubs, if the sensors were out, it would turn over but have no spark, you are right on that. But he's saying he has fuel, spark and air and it turns over fine.....just read a little, timing sensor meaning cam sensor...also, could the wires for the compression releases be disconnected?

Wow, love this forum, so many ideas. So here's a little more clarity to the situation. I started the bike about a month ago and let it run for awhile. I went to start it about 2 weeks ago and nothing. Here's what I did: Pulled plugs and checked for spark which is good, zapped myself trying to shade it so I could see bettero_O. Pulled the carb cover and filter, gas squirts like a beast when I twist the throttle. I'm assuming that it's getting to the cylinders, might try chubs idea and squirt some gas through the plug holes, although the plugs were wet when I pulled them. Gas is good, treated with startron too:oldthumbsup:. I'm running Mobile 1 20-50 oil, about the same elev. as you 05chop, 6700ft. It's been in the mid 60's here for awhile and I sit it in the sun to warm it, and put a light against the case. My next step here in a bit is to check the compression. Thanks for all the help fellas, this shit is confusing, and it doesn't help when I hear bikes go by all day.:oldbang:

I don't think it's the temperature...my bike fires and runs at 38 degrees overcast no sun, runs like shit, but runs and it used to fire at about 8000ft in Colorado......Keep it simple...from what you described, if it ran a month ago and then NOT a few weeks later, after maybe an oil change? It's going to be something simple I'm hoping...since you didn't run it or anything and then it didn't start. If you are getting fuel, spark and it turns over....does it turn over really fast or slow?

I know you checked VOLTAGE on your battery, did you check amperage on crank?

If you are indeed getting gas and spark at the cylinders its either compression or too low of voltage to crank it over fast enough. How did it run last time it was in? If good id say your low on voltage and starter isnt spinning it over fast enough to start

No oil change. When I crank it, it spins like it always has, to a certain point, then the battery starts to die. When the guy tested it he said it kicked out 500 cca, then the amp tested 12 point something and was climbing, though not load test on amp. Where should I check the amp when cranking?

What is the certain point, how long? How old is the battery?

Again, I'm thinking it's something simple.....go buy another battery like at walmart or something, even a cheapo one with high CCA, bring it back and see if the bike fires....and runs....if it's not that, take the battery back......If you are indeed getting fuel, spark, air etc....it could just be a bad cell in a battery.....

Just an example, my sons van was dying. I'd only put a new alternator and battery in about a year prior, so I ASSUMED it was good, a year old right? took it out, had it tested at autzone, they said it was good.....on a hunch, I just bought a new one, put it in, and the van has been running for 2 years now....so the alternator tested good, but was the issue....

You pulled wet plugs correct when a spark plug gas fouls change them.Fuel tank petcock remove fuel line at gas tank check for fuel leaking with valve shut in the off position.2003 Chopper when was the last time carb was rebuilt im thinking needle and seat leaking which needs a carb kit call curtis. But first try spark plugs see if this helps it start you could of washed the oil from the rings when they do this I blow out cylinders with shop air.

Yep, that worked for me. You say it's gotta be something simple, you're right. Replace the spark plug wires but use the exact same brand if wires that came with it when it was new. My 07 K-9 came with Accell wires.

Well shit. I went ahead and bought a battery Marky it needed done, it cranked a lot faster and longer but still no fire. I pulled plugs and they were wet again, but I went ahead and dropped some gas in the holes. I'm not sure when the last time the carb was rebuilt, not in the last 3 years. The plugs and wires are 2 years old but with 2 hip surgeries i haven't rode a whole lot. Rode quite a bit this fall after moving back to Co. and ready to make up for lost time. I didn't get to the compression check maybe tomorrow. Thanks again all, I'll keep you posted.

Replace spark plug wires. Mine did same thing last weekend. I also drained the gas tank. Got fresh High octane gasoline and added Seafoam Motor Treatment and it now fires up like its brand new.
