So I’ve tried cleaning old starter and using, tried new starter, tried installing override button on starter, all to no avail. It tries to engage starter but doesn’t. Idk if the bendix or jackshaft is messed up but on the new one it pushes out and then I have to tap it back in bc it doesn’t retract. The old one comes in and out but still won’t engage. Battery good, tried different alignment, I’m at a loss. Also I noticed the primary is chewed up a little it looks like the jackass I bought it from used the wrong bolts on the clutch basket so I hope it’ll be ok with an oil change and the metal shavings didn’t destroy my engine. It ran great last time I shut it down so I don’t think that’s the issue, but is anyone Has any help what the correct bolts are I’d appreciate it. Ty

Bench test your starters to get clues.
Maybe your clutch hub nut is backing out causing the clutch assembly to hit the cover.

Grab that clutch pack and see if it moves in and out.
The pattern on your outer primary cover indicates that the bolts have been hitting it which is usually from a loose hub nut.
I'd disassemble the clutch and check everything and re-assemble it.
bnech check the starters as mentioned.

After further investigation, I’ve taken my primary apart and disassembled my clutch basket removed the drive gear and sprocket to find my inner primary is chewed up on the engine side of the case. This along with the outer primary being chewed up from the bolts leads me to believe the bearings are bad, but is it just the primary cover bearings or transmission bearings? The basket was firmly held on, no play at all

See if there is any play in the shaft (in and out) or side to side.
check the bearing in the clutch setup and see if it feels rough or loose when turning.

Input shaft is tight in every direction and in and out, 0 play in it. But the clutch bearing is fucked… it’s pretty rough but still spins

Any luck on the clutch Mike?
Got one more pile to dig into. Been a little slow looking actually as I fell the other day doing a project and not moving as fast as normal (which at this point in my life is not fast at all anyway) Hopefully I can get to it tomorrow since I leave on Tuesday for Panama City Beach - Thunder on the Beach.
