I have a 2003 Chopper that will not start. Last month, it backfired a couple of times while starting (I've had the bike 9 years and that was a first). Also, the right turn signal switch broke so I replaced all 6 with a chrome set of switches purchased at the HD shop. All 6 of the switches work okay but I can't get the bike to start. Here is what I've done to get to this point in troubleshooting.
1.) Pulled the plugs - no fire.
2.) Starter motor quit after about 5 seconds and all power dropped (everything went dark @ 8 volts) but recovered to 13 volts in seconds after I released the "start" switch. I can hit "start" again and it spins for another 5 seconds and quits.
3.) No LED flashing in thunderheart.
4.) 13.5 volts on 2 year old battery (battery cables 1 year old).
5.) Replaced battery - no change.
6.) Checked starter motor connections, all good.
7.) Disconnected cam position sensor from the circuit.
I installed a 2K starter 2 years ago and think that is the problem but the backfire and switch problems could be involved. There is a current limiter circuit in that unit w/2LEDs that sits on the battery but I can't find the part number for this. Also if the starter has a shorted field or the armature is damaged how is it turning over at all? Any help/ideas greatly apricated.
