I own a 06 BD K9. I installed a bump button about 2 years ago. I installed a new starter and ignition switch.

I attempted to start and the first 2 attempts were met with a starter that tried to spin the engine. Bad battery. I installed a new battery, now nothing.

Starter wont engage, nothing, wont even try to spin. Light doest even dim when it push the bump button in.

Looking, Im showing a solid red light and a solid green.

Any help the experts can give is greatly appreciated. Im just a novice if I would even qualify for that.

One of the biggest $ expensive electrical system mistakes I find is, NOT diagnosing the exact problem before spending any money. The internet can be your friend.

It was starting fine. I pretty sure thats why im here, to garner help, research before doing something that doesn't work. Thanks Brother for that solid self righteous help....

What battery did you put in there? Just because it is new, doesn't mean it was a good one. A lot of these cheap jap batteries are coming with shorted cells in them. They may show 13 volts, but if the cell is shorted it won't work. We recommend Deka batteries. They will hold up to the vibration these bikes put out, and will last 6-7 years. You can pick one up at a Harley shop or order one on Amazon .

You said, you "installed a new battery" :( by what you posted. Kinda like putting the "Cart before the Horse".

Well check the new battery as mentioned and check all the wires on the battery.
Since it went from turning over with battery dying to not turning over at all, you have to look first at what changed between those two attempts.
1 - different battery -- have it load tested, load test the old one if you still have it as well.
2 - the wires were moved.

Start there.

Welcome from NJ,
If and I do mean If you have 12.8 vdc at your Battery . Check your pos cable and the ground cables for good connections. If they check out pull your slam button out and see if all is well inside . When you push the slam it's a dead short and it can only be No connection between the Pos side of the starter and the ground. The contacts inside or the button itself could be damaged.

All of you are great. Thank you. The new battery showed 13.7 on the meter. When tested, the new battery shows 0 CCA.

Bad Battery. On my way to the HD Dealer.

At least I am learning along the way.

Thanks again,

If you can swap it out for the Deka Mr Wright suggested. You won't be disappointed.

Wall, than you to each of you who offered good sound advice and direction to a guy who is struggling in a post combat world. Learning comes much slower now and i appreciate the patience with a slow learner.

After we traced down the fact we ultimately had a bad battery, I went ahead and cleand off all the contacts along with a clean up of the starter and its components. She fired off like the beast she is.

As with all things mechanical, it just cant be that easy. Anything worth having has to cost you....

One more thing to learn....rebuild that starter.

When you say " fired off like the beast she is " do you mean the engine started? Or just the starter turned with enough torque to break the shaft. It might be a good idea to jack the bike up , pull the plugs , put it in 6th gear and turn the engine over by turning the back wheel so you can feel how much resistance there is.

Well yeah, that would do it too. Hadn't seen that in a long time.
Yea it's been a while for a broken jackshaft. If you are going to rebuild the starter double check the starter nose and make sure where it mounts to the primary isn't cracked. If the starter doesn't line up straight or if the bolts holding it onto the primary loosened up a bit that jack shaft will always break.

My bad. She turned over and fired off. I let her run around 3 minutes and shut her down. When I cranked her the second time that is when the starter shaft sheared. Shut it down and fished it out. Took a spare starter and replaced the shaft. Out riding now.

For sure not expecting the sheared shaft. The bike is shifting out well and the starter is working as it should. This bike has been abused by a previous owner. I love it but she can be a pain in the ass at times. The saving grace is i didn't give a whole lot for her and she runs like like the Big Dog she is.

Im not sure what the issues are with the steel shearing. I did have a main shaft sheared clean. I spoke with the boys at Baker in Michigan and they explained when the company got going they insisted on saving money everywhere. Baker boys were not suprised at my issue and described everything to a t that happened without knowing. In the end I rebuilt the transmission and bought a used for a backup. Im not suprised the sheared happened with a shaft in the starter.

I don't really run this bike down. I love it. It had given far more to me than she has took. I loved her paint when I saw it. I love the power coming from a 117 S&S. No, not the biggest anymore, but damn she has ass to move her and me. I have broke her down and put her back together. I have learned and continue to learn. I just damn sure have a good time with her.

In the end, I have also learned to listen to you. Those that know far more than this simple mind does.

Thanks again......for patience with a guy that forgets faster than I learn.
