Good tires

I don't quite need tires currently, but was wondering what tires you guys have had success with. I have an Avon AV-72 300 on the rear and it's got some wear on it. Read some reviews about the Avon on how some people's tires split. Heading up to Maggie valley September 11th in the North Carolina mountains for a little rally and was a little concerned with my tire and the current wear that it has on it.

One of the old ones.
I have bought Avons for over 100,000 miles On my K9’s and never had an issue with any of them—Blacktopper has a similar experience with his. I understand the splitting was an issue that was resolved some time back. I tried one Shinko, and it seems to be a good tire, but prefer to buy American (or in this case British), so the next tire will be back to Avons.

note to self: the BDM was designed around the Avon tires, especially the 300mm back tire. Metzeler and Shinko are good tires in their own place, but, they are both wider and leave less clearance between the tire and the drive belt.

Hell I only got about an eighth of an inch right now between my tire and the drive belt I I guess I can't go either one of those routes and it's not that I'm not satisfied with it but God Almighty I know on my other bikes I rode a whole lot more than 4,000 mi on a tire More like 12,000, started noticing wear and tear at about seven or eight thousand. And I know it's a different bike and a different size tire I just hate f****** throwing money away

Same here Rick, the tread splice issue was resolved some time ago, the tires are manufactured in England but owned by an American company.

agree. the old Avon that came on my '07 got about 12k on it but then they decided to "improve" it. they made the compound softer so you would get better traction, but the trade-off was durability. they have done another "improvement" since then which is some better but still not as good as the Venom.

Yup, those Venoms wore forever. I think mine had 13k when I had to change to Cobra's. They sucked. 6-7k was tops for me. I hope the new ones? last a bit longer?

I would not say the bike was designed around a specific tire.

Regardless the shinko has exactly the same 1/8” gap to the belt my Avon did.

The Metzler was the tire that had a little wider lip guys were having issues with.

Me too. The Shinko tire fit is exactly the same as all the Avons on my K9. I never tried a Metzler bcs too many Forum members reported shorter tire mileage, and the clearance issue.

i stand corrected. i was going by the spec sheet info for the other 2 tires stating larger widths than the Avon, which was the only tire used on the BDM bikes, ergo the thought they were designed around the Venom.

Shinkos, period. 300 and 21/90 on my doorstep for $262. Research Shinko, theyve been around for years and also make racing tires.

Hey I'm going to the Cherokee Rally also, maybe if you like we could meet up somewhere and ride in together? As far as your tires go, I'm running Avon Cobras on the Mastiff and Avon Venoms on the bagger. I've never had any major issues with them and they are in my opinion a great tire.

You're going to have to go up 26 from Spartanburg to 40 then a little bit on 74 and then I think 19 all the way up through Maggie valley either way we'll keep up and definitely do some riding.
