Oil change.? 04 chopper.

Can anyone tell me how much engine oil I should use in my 04 Bd chopper doing first oil change. And should I use full synthetic?

Just another helpful hint, also, while draining the oil, remove the plug at the bottom middle of the engine case. It will drain out about a pint of oil. That will be very dirty scavenge oil that usually doesn’t get drained and should ALWAYS be drained at same time as rest of oil change. Put some pipe tape when putting back and don’t overtighten. The stuff you hear about “it’s bad to remove that plug” is bulkshit!! That pint or more of dirty/sludgy oil will ruin your engine prematurely.

Sorry Lorenzo, I'm going to argue your point. Do not remove the plug in the bottom of the engine. If you mess up the threads, it is not a cheap repair. Undo the clamp holding the end of your drain line, so you can get to it easily, when the engine and exhaust is hot. Ride the bike for several miles to get it good and warm, and the oil pumped back to the tank. Pull the drain plug and drain the tank, with the fill cap off. Slide a thin piece of cardboard under your oil filter, and remove it. That little bit of oil left in the engine will not be a problem.

Completely false of the removing the bottom plug. I work on bikes and have been for over 30 years and remove that plug every time. Especially on the S&S motors. It removes just like a regular drain plug. That’s actually what it is there for. That little bit of oil that is left in the belly of the case is holding all the bad particles such as shavings etc. all that’s happening when that’s not drained is recirculating through the motor and building up more by the next oil change. Remember, it’s sitting in the case where the crank and such are. That “don’t remove that plug cuz you could damage it going back in” is total bull!!! I’ve been doing it and I’m sure many many others are doing it too. Oh and by the way, that’s actually what that plug is there for.

I agree with draining the engine oil via the bottom drain plug. Why would S&S, or Harley for that matter, put a magnet on the plug if it wasn't meant to be drained? I also agree with using some " smarts" when reinstalling the drain plug, using pipe tape and NOT over tightening... I've been doing this on all my bikes for years, NEVER a problem... Just my two pennies

Uhm, Why?

"That’s actually what it is there for."
Actually it is there for two reasons:
1) To check for metal particles to determine if there is damage in that area of the motor.
2) To hold those particles to prevent them from getting into the pump and possibly causing damage.
Neither have anything to do with draining oil.

" That little bit of oil that is left in the belly of the case is holding all the bad particles such as shavings etc. "
The oil that collects in the crank case is mist oil from the high pressure side of the oil pump.
That oil has been filtered through the tappet screen so if you have metal pieces on your crank plug when you remove it you have issues.

"all that’s happening when that’s not drained is recirculating through the motor and building up more by the next oil change. "
Oil in the crankcase is scavenged by the oil pump which then passes it through the oil filter so how does it recirculate through the motor until the next oil change?

Sorry but all I hear is, as it was so eloquently phrased earlier, "Bullshit".

Having stated all the above I do have to agree with removing it each oil change for one reason, to make sure there are no issues in that area of the motor.

I do agree completely with the Scavenger use though and believe everyone should be using it when they do their oil changes.

Cheers thanks Bro! I wondered about that plug?
