Is there a gas cap (for a BDM) that doesn't seize?

Mr. Wright

Knows some things
What you have done is stripped the plastic lock between the cap and threats. now the only way to get this off of there now, is to drill a 3/8 hole down to the very center of the cap. This'll drill out the bolt that is holding the threads. Then you can pry the plastic threads out of the paint saver.

Blue blue done this few years ago...i taped my tank up with rags all around the gas cap so i wouldnt take a chance on scratching the tank...took a hack saw blade itself without the hack saw and cut the plastic threaded cap very careful to get the cap off...barely hasd enough room between the gas cap and paint saver to do it.....freaking sucked but i got it....

chrome cap spins around...and around...and around! Threads are still locked in!
So the first thing I would do is order the aluminum version from Shannon so that you have it for when you do get the original one off.

I would first go to Home Depot in the plumbing section there is a tool that's basically an abrasive wire with 2 handheld ends that is used to saw off pipe in hard-to-reach place.
Basically you're going back and forth by hand with the wire I don't know that it will cut off the cap but it's worth a try and it's not that expensive and it would be good to have around the house for other projects.

To all thanks for your input. After having some time to think about this over dinner...and drinks, just 2 at my age...I think the chrome cap is not the problem of spinning. When I turn it it turns, although a little stiff, but at a certain point it feels loose, like it is below the metal threads and can't get above it to unscew...if that makes sense. So if that is the case what should I try? I am not some kid...I am almost 60 years old with lots of patience and willing to listen and learn from you all. Picked the K9 up Wednesday and spent the last 3 1/2 days going over everything. Have a shop manual. Got to ride it today for the first time ever...awesome machine! Bummed I am at this juncture, but we will figure it out! Thank you all for your concern and thoughts. Just asking for all possible scenarios to try so I can get my knees in the breeze again!

The chrome cap has a plastic thread insert bolted to it and that is what screws in the tank....the problem is the chrome cap is spinning not the plastic thread...the lock on it is stripped thats why the chrome cap is spinning and not unlocking the threads...plastic piece cant spin out with the lock stripped....the bolt in the center it what hold it tight to the chrome cap and on the locking tab....here is a picture of how its made20190921_212259.jpg

Gas cap going to require pliers to get off.
Prefer not to buy another version of the same thing (that will eventually seize also).
This doesn't happen on other bikes, at least not mine, so clearly the technology to produce a non locking gas cap exists.
Does anyone produce a non locking gas cap for BDMs, specifically an 04 ridgeback?
I had the same problem over the years. Actually had to ask another gas patron to wrench my cap off (quite embarrassing). I bought a gas cap addition. It holds on with 3 set screws. Been using it for about 5 years now and havent had one problem.

Can't wait to get this behind me and get the "Dog" back on the road!

Dont drill all the way thru....drill into so far and see if u can pry it off....protect ur tank around the cap really good while doing this...if it wont pry after drilling u can drill a little further....once u get it off u can get ahold of the plastic threads and screw it out

Hey Shannon, if his K9 is the same size as my 05 Chopper DT, can you make me one also while you're at it and we'll handle the transaction in the usual fashion?
