I did that years ago when I rebuilt a motor in my car, I thought I marked the plugs wires correctly but had them wrong before I marked them:oldlaugh: That was an uncontrolled downward spiral, but look at it this way, you won't make mistakes if you don't do anything. lol

Do you have any pics of the paint job? That's a different spin on paint:old2:

Kel you know I have to give you some harassing :oldlaugh:
Get that thumb outta the way next time, ouch. Tip of the day, when something like that happens to a finger/thumb, to keep it from thumping, take a .015 drill bit between your fingers and drill a hole in the finger/thumb nail, it will immediately relieve the pressure.

You have to do that as son as it happens. You can use a paper clip too, heat up one end till it is red then stick into the nail where it is blackest.
I've been a mechanic / fabricator, almost my whole life and this is the first time this has ever happened.. really didn' even hurt that much and didn't even notice it until after I took my glove off like an hour later.. next day there was zero pain so I didn' think much of ir.. but that black nail just got bigger n bigger.. lol

Here are the options I see to fix this.
1. Apply a press fit retaining adhesive. (Loctite has a few of these)
2. Drill and tap a for a set screw.
3. Cut a slit in one side of the housing so it will clamp down on shaft with bolt.
4. Find/make a press fit bushing. (Rocker Locker Solution)

I am amazed after all these years the OEM's have not addressed this deficiency.
Update:

Bike is back together and the valve clatter is almost completely gone. So much better. Granted I had a lot of noise from a loose valve guide.

So.. second starter in 5 months.. doing almost the exact same thing.. I guess upping my compression and doing all them upgrades was great but them starters don't last..
The first pics are the starter that was good in the pic with the old starter in the last pics that so almost the same thing...
