Tach wiring question

Looking forward to retirement
image.jpeg image.jpeg got the tach in and it looks great! Now remember this tach is for a 2004 bike and older. Now since my bike 2003 was not wired for a tach would it have the clip for this tach to plug into it since this is the correct tach for my bike? If not does anyone know which wire goes where?

Knows some things
The green wire will hook to the yellow wire on your ignition module, that also goes to the coil. Look around under the tank, the other 03 I had, didn't have a tach, but the wiring was there. The color of the wires will be red, black , yellow. Red and black are of course hot and ground. You can get 12 volt from the back of the speed-o-meter.

I've been looking for a thread like this. I have a 2003 Pitbull that I want to put a tach on. I see that this one has three wires; are those three wires all that is involved in installing a tach? Is there no cable or anything else? I'll be finding an after market tach I'm sure so do I need to look for something special there?

Do you have a single fire coil or dual fire coil

How do I tell? I'm new to all of this but I managed to disassemble my primary and clutch, fix it with a dremel and get it back together fine the other day so I think I'm learning quick.

Getting very hard to find.
Mine bolt between the handle bars.
I put one together and started with this cup.

They also had the mounting bracket and then used an auto meter gage.
Changed the auto meter for the BigDog one.
So not quite original but pretty damn close.
The original used accessory becomes available very rarely.

That is a stock dual fire coil. If you look at the coil you have 2 wires (12V, and a trigger) it fires front and rear at the same time. In a single fire there are 3, 12V and a trigger for the front and a trigger for the rear. For the Tach, there are 3 wires, +12V, GND, and the signal from the ignition module (Green wire from the first pic). Look around under the tank, there might actually be a pigtail there for a Tach.

Thank you, I understand how it works now. It reads RPM from the ignition rather than the engine itself so it is all electric and I just have to tie into that. I should be able to figure this out.
