well my dealer called today and said bdm isnt covering the starter leak, cause out of warranty, and he states because its not that bad of a leak,i sure would like to get a list of people that had problems with there starter and had it taken care of,and if they had a warranty or not? is there a service bullitan on this problem? also dealer said they were gonna leave the ehc alone cause everything looks fine even no the bolts sheered right off(dipshit dealer) but they will cover the side covers from the cracks,go figure, and the dipshit dealer said i have to leave the bike there till the covers come back, but i spoke with bdm and they said i didnt have to,so im picking it up,why should it sit there for a month or 2? im very dissapointed with bdm,and this dealer i advise no one go there they arent very knowledgeable and not helpfull, even know i gave them a very good reccomend, all this stuff happen a week later,oh well..

No problem with a starter leak but I did have the side covers replaced. The dealer took only one off to send to match the paint and I rode it until they came in.

Delly,

On the 2005 there was some issue with the seal for the starter going allowing primary fluid to seep by jack shaft and creep into starter winding. This would show up as oil leaking from the starter. RVH has had same problem and there is some good info on it.

If you have a leak from starter, there is no such thing as not enough to worry about. Starter do not have oil in them and the oil that is leaking will eventually saturate the windings and short it out as well as possibly screwing up the starter requiring new one.

Since it is out of warranty, will the dealer cover it when it fails totatlly?

I would seriously look at having it fixed or if needed replaced. That said, my dealer says there is a starter seal kit that BDM came out with that is designed to correct this problem. He gave RVH the P/N, so hopefully he may post it up, in case other need it also.

Now RVH said his dealer or others knew nothing about the Starter Seal Kit, but once he gets the P/N up, hopefully that will help others. Regardless, I can assure you that the dealer should be handled with kit gloves if he is telling you the leak is not bad enough to be concerned.

As far as getting it taken care of due to be out of warranty, can not help you on that. There was no recall, but was a Technical Service Bulletin on the 2005 starter and to the best of my knowledge dealer or manufacture is not required to replace at their cost for a TSB. It is a TSB to tell them how to fix a problem if it occurs, but not a no cost fix after warranty from waht I understand.

I know that originally many dealers would just replace starter under warranty approval by BDM, however if the starter seal kit was designed to take care of issue, there is no reason anyone should pay the big bucks for a new starter IMHO if it can be fixed and repaired for much less by a competent mechanic and/or starter specialist.

Oh here is the info on the TSB for the 2005 starters.

Here is the info for the TSB:

Another round please
The out of warranty issue is just what it says. Try taking anything else you have thats out of warranty and it will not get fixed(cars, appliances, ect). I know Bigdog has fixed many things even though they were out of warranty, even replaced my EHC out of warranty, but its up to them at that point. I think they go over and above many times to fix issues but you can never please everyone. Being kind to them gets you along way. The dealer issue is seperate from the warranty issue. Some dealers can make Bigdog look bad, but its corporate that defines if it fixes something out of warranty. Over time, everthing goes bad from use and everyday wear and tear. It did not come with a tire to tire lifetime warranty. Just my 2 cents.

I had it happen to my 05 Pit and there was a service bulletin and new seal kit as Fiber said. My leak was leaving a spot on the floor and running down the frame. Dealer was 3 hours away so I pulled the starter and shipped it they fixed and paid freight 4 days of downtime.

delly,

What is the part number that FH gave you, could by chance the other dealers be confusing the seal kit with the re-built kit, possibly even same just different nomenclature. As V indicated, he had he done with the kit.

If nothing else, didn't FH say if you wanted to send it to them, they could get it taken care of, much like V had done by a dealer.

Also the kit that they refered to may have to have it disassembled to be installed, not sure but it is very possible that the re-build kit and the seal kit are one and the same.

Post the P/N so maybe it can be confirmed by someone in better knowledge.

delly,

I know RVH indicated that he got the seal kit P/N from FH, but never seen if he posted it or not.

If FH does have the right kit, I'm sure that they can get it too you and sell you one. Not trying to take anything away from Nelson, and I have no dog in this hunt, but hell if going to get them to run the numbers for you, may be good to also give them the bucks.

Another option may be to check with DragH down in Florida. She may or her ship may be more familar with the proper kit to put the seal on the shaft or wahtever.

Nelson,

Did you get the P/N of 173-00000500? If so is it not showing up in your system or bad P/N. Let me know and if is still in question, I will check with them and buy one to see if it is what appears to be the ticket. If so I know that many get their parts from you and are appreciative for it, so if it checks out, may be something to get a hand on for a few kits.

Later and have a good safe night.

Got the part number, but its not showing up in any of my documentation and even called BDM local and they don't have it either. We're making another call on Monday to clear it up.

I'll see if the dealer has one in stock here and buy it if they do. Then see what it is and and get pics up. If correct it may indeed be the missing link for the starter problems leak. Good luck on your search also.
